Velociraptors became the coolest dinosaur, but then scientists hypothesized that they had feathers and they became uncool (because feathers, m i rite?)

Then the Jurassic World movies came out and dinosaurs in general became uncool.

Life's funny, huh

i always figured that was another half assed scene they stole from the books.

in the first book, raptors make it onto one of the ships before they leave. no one got eaten (i think).

Velociraptors were larger than chickens in addition to being a bit taller, they were significantly longer head to tail. They are more like eagles.

My brother said the other day that paleontologists had been theorizing that dinosaurs had feathers since like the 80's (he likes to read paleontology research papers in his free time for some reason). So even by the dino craze, popular renditions were outdated. Even now the public perception is quite behind, I believe. Of course, this may be false, but I don't care enough to do a bunch of research to verify this, so take with plenty of salt.

you're absolutely right, but i dont think michael crichton ever claimed he was going for pure realism with the books. movies just kind of took it off the rails entirely.

Well as I understand it, entertainment (understandably) took liberties for the sake of coolness. It's not really a big deal, but I do think the public perception is that Jurassic Park was an accurate representation of dinosaurs according to the paleontologists of the time.

The moment that put the velociraptors over for most people in JP1 was at the very end when they're cornered in the visitor's center and one of the two raptors comes through the curtain and it looks left to right with this shit-eating grin on its face like it's saying, "perfect, perfect."

Sam Neill is such a grossly underrated actor. When he scares the fuck out of that fat kid with the raptor claw at the beginning and how he wholesomely goes from cold and "get the fuck away from me" to the kids to basically embracing them completely and saving them a bunch.

JP1 was a gem.

on the up side, i've talked to professors that claim that jurassic park injected a huge amount of new blood and talent into the paleontology field.

I thought they hadn't determined yet if all dinosaurs had feathers? I can't remember if they definitively proved some did, though I thought they had, but I thought the whole theory of all of them having feathers wasn't proven yet.

its been in flux for decades. i think the currently accepted model is that theropods (the bipedal dinos that share the same ancestors as birds) could have feathers but that sauropods (the quadrapedal ones like the brachiosaurus) didn't.
