I can see the professor's perspective - the student could have viewed all the questions and researched the answers so there's no way for the professor to confirm that the student is doing everything honestly.

Yes? I dont know how these online tests are framed, but it becomes invalid if you have access to all the questions at once and can edit them before the final submission. If its a system where you cannot see the next question until you have submitted your final answer for the previous question, then thatd be different.

Holy shit where to even fucking start.

First of all, if there's a problem with higher ed in the US it's that it costs so much money to attend. Guess what? Countries with free uni are still capitalist countries.
Secondly, these are not "for-profit universities." That has a very specific definition that does not apply outside of some small scam schools like University of Phoenix.
Thirdly, to imply professors are complicit in some type of scheme to fleece students out of their hard-earned money without providing them with a legitimate education is unbelievably ignorant and out of touch with the reality of academia.

As a part time professor at a University, I would've just given them a second chance. It's why I make sure quizzes don't make up a huge part of the grading. It's also why I put emphasis on participation and homework (and no I'm not one of those professors that assign so much it eats up the majority of your day) than quizzes and tests, though the university requires that we make the midterm and final at least 25%.

I TAed problem sets and homework two consecutive years to second-year students. I had my own class of twenty and I was expected to teach competently and mark homework competently.

Guess what? If someone said they submitted but I never received it (paper, they threw it into a locked container that I had a key to), we'd err on the side of believing them and give them a second chance. Guess how many abused the system? Very few, if any at all

Students are adults and deserve to be treated as such

Ah yes, because all professors should be expected to add an hour to their workload for every quiz, for every class they teach, even adjuncts getting paid shit and possibly teaching at multiple schools. Genius.

I don't think it's unreasonable for professors to have backup quizzes, especially for subjects like math. Especially when everything is online and they can just re-use previously recorded lectures so they have extra time to draft alternate quizzes.

Isn't there a subreddit where a TA caught like a whole bunch of people cheating by uploading a fake answer to one of those cheating sites?

And in my personal experience, like 1/5th of a class cheated for O Chem. The professor literally ripped the class about it the next class session.

I mean, who do you think uses those cheating sites? Exactly. Students.

There's no background on the student either. If they are an AAA student with good grades and known for their good homework/projects then you could give them the benefit of the doubt and allow a retest.

If they are known to have bad grades, barely a passing score, never completes homework, does the min amount of effort and so on. Then I'd definitely be suspicuous and call bs on their story.
