The game was positively received in general, and we still like big name RPG series. I don't think you can argue it'll suffer from being a remake when RE2 won GOTY last year.

The only reason FFVIIR could underperform is because it's just the first part.

Well-received remakes are often pretty powerful, depending on the strength of the game they're based on.

Remasters are the ones who aren't worth anything, really, since they are basically HD ports.

If a very well-received brand-new AND nostalgia-feuled Final Fantasy that stars Cloud and Tifa isn't capable of winning GOTY when its competition is as weak as 2020's field is lookingg like then what hope does 16 have against any Nintendo game of actual worth?

I didn't adjust the main field. The only adjustments I made were having to decide which double elimination results to use in the event of a rematch, and I generally chose whatever made the losing character look best.

You're correct. Nobody likes Ganon. They do like Ganondorf, which is why he won his division and got to the double elimination portion to begin with.

You're arguing in bad faith because you like sprite rounds and you got upset for being accused of sabotage. You know pictures matter. I don't think you gave Ganondorf a bad picture on purpose, but he has underperformed literally every time he's had it.

Nah, it's not beating FFX or anything, but FFXVI would have to be massively well received to beat it, I think. We've demonstrated we don't think that much of the series beyond FFX. Even back when FFVII could hang with OoT, FFXII was a huge step behind the others and could only get 60% on Crisis Core of all things.

Except there was never really any evidence for that except for Link/Magus and Snake/Frog, and those were probably more related to how bad their opponent looked. Crono lost to Vincent with a sprite in 2007 and beat him without it in 2008. Sprites don't really appear to boost an opponent, but a bad sprite definitely drags someone down. Ganondorf is the prime example of that.

Well, Snake, too, I guess. He doesn't come anywhere close to losing to Frog without it, even in 2004. The match with Bowser isn't 50/50 either.

There was probably a bandwagon effect on top of that, but the bad pic for the opponent didn't hurt.

Crono/Bowser proved that pictures dont mean anything. Crono did worse with his sprite, and I was told for 15 years that Chrono Trigger with sprites is godmode.

You're aware that "Pictures matter" and "Pictures for CT matter" are two different arguments, right? I agree that there's no evidence that CT characters overperform with sprites, but that has nothing to do with pictures mattering overall.

I thought that Samus/Tifa settled this argument for good.

Nah. I'm looking at 2008 and these pictures are almost ALL trash. And no one is going to look at a poll and go "well I was going to vote for Luigi instead of Tifa but her boobs are visible in this match pic so sure". Pictures are fun, but they are negligible. If anyone blames me, they're just being an idiot.

I think that was roughly a 9 hour poll, based on posts in the stats topic archives that noted a new poll went up on the homepage around 3:00 PM EST. The extra poll would have been located directly below the contest match in the side column of the homepage.

not everybody makes lists of their favorite characters and follows them faithfully the way we do so a good picture can absolutely influence their vote

there's a reason why bandwagons happen every year with unexpected results because most voters aren't bound to vote the same character every time when it's not Link

"People" did not hate the sprite round. A vocal minority of crybabies hated the sprite round, which conveniently only started when I started making match pictures. Outside of Solid Shit, Board 8 loved sprite rounds all the way up until 2010, and I put in mostly the same sprites we've always had. Imagine that.

Of course I'll defend my work from children not only who offer no constructive criticism whatsoever, but who don't make any pictures themselves. Notice how I never get mad at any of the picsmiths like Zen and Squirrel who offer solid pointers to help raise everyone up -- you know, like good people would do. I only attack the whiny crybabies, of which you're increasingly a part of in recent years. Dunno why, because you're not an unhappy guy or anything.

I hated the 2008 pictures. They all sucked. Instead of bitching, I did better. It is that simple. Instead of complaining, maybe you should try paying for Photoshop and do some work yourself, champ.

That I can agree with, but I'm always going to push back when people accuse me of sabotage, especially when it involves the most important game of my childhood (Zelda 1). I like the sprite round because I like the sprite round. That's legit all there is to it.
