Orlando_Jordan 09/10/20 10:21:37 AM #1:	First, to be an AK-47, it has to have an automatic mode. A semi-automatic, cosmetically similar rifle doesn't cut it. Secondly, the Firearm Owners Protection Act was passed in 1986. It doesn't allow citizens to purchase new machine guns. Now there's a third reason that makes AK-47s even more rare, and this one is more nuanced and I wouldn't blame an average joe for not knowing. It has to be milled out of a block of steel instead of made from folded stamped steel. This is an old fashioned manufacturing process. But TC your last reason is the real reason. They stopped making 47s in the early 50s and switched to AKM's. Really the select fire thing doesn't have much to do with it other than the fact that every real AK-47 made in the like 5 years they made them were select fire. 99% of AK's floating around the world, semi or select fire, are AKM's. The 47 in the modern world just designates it is 7.62x39 and 74 means 5.45x39.
