not necessarily. i mean the spritz bottle of essential oils might just be labelled "oil" without specifying the precise ratio of tea tree oil to eucalyptus, and the salt might not be labelled "artisinal himalayan sea salt" so you know, there's like an air of mystery and abiguity surrounding the pizza.

I'm going to add that I slice those bell pepper rings to order and sell 6-9 a night, getting 2-3 pizza worth per pepper and keeping them whole is much fresher than pre-chopped peppers.

Uhh, slicing pepper rings to order isn't exactly worth boasting about. Cutting the half dozen you put on there should take about 10 seconds for anyone competent enough to know which edge of the knife to use.

I feel like its anything people can be allergic to, as well. At least in a restaurant. The problem is, people can be allergic to most foods. Its not common, but possible. I think it can definitely be illegal if you improperly label like everything there...

that's why the menu would usually include the "peanuts/tree nuts"/ "if any of your party has a food allergy" warning.

one of my exes was violently allergic to onions of all things. it was literally impossible to take her out to eat. my current FWB is very allergic to eggplant. i had a friend back home that was so allergic to dairy (more specifically casein) that she had to carry an epipen with her at all times, and one of my best friends in high school was deathly allergic to shrimp/chitin.

food mostly gets a pass because cross-contamination is always a nigh-unavoidable risk.

its MSDS chemicals that always have to be properly labelled in a commercial environment of any kind.

Yes, I did refrain from commenting on obvious common sense. Preparing whatever is possible to order to avoid preparing too much is something everyone who has ever tried to limit their food waste learned immediately upon starting to think about it. That's also not worth highlighting as though it's something special.

Of course, being a day or two old doesn't exactly make an appreciable difference when you're dealing with veggies that are getting cooked, especially in an oven (which tends to dry them out a bit anyway). Raw? Sure. But on that time scale, all that's going to happen to the pepper is some drying around the cut edges, which is completely negated if you cook moisture out of or into it. In a blind taste test, I can just about guarantee you couldn't tell the difference between a slice of pizza made with fresh-cut peppers and a slice made with ones that were cut yesterday. Trying to maximize the freshness of ingredients is still best practice (for FIFO purposes, if nothing else), but it doesn't always make a huge difference.

Its not just them. The people who check places for safety would ding them for every one of those infractions and shut them down. Not to mention lying to people about whats on their food. Just because one person has allergies and another doesnt mean nothing. Especially since they could bring it somewhere to share (They apparently do take out). Or share with someone there...

It is their problem. But that doesnt mean you get to lie about your food. Especially since they are being careful by asking what is on the food before eating. Its just that someone can lie and kill them because you want to keep a secret...

It's not uncommon for restaurants to turn people with serious food allergies away, but they do have the responsibility to do so if they can't/don't want to accommodate them. When restaurants do accommodate allergies, it's for the good PR/to keep people's business, not because they're forced to. If they are informed that a customer has allergies, and they neither refuse their business nor take reasonable precautions to avoid triggering said allergies, then they very much should be held liable for the ensuing reaction.

I didn't know dairy allergies got that bad.

Also those warning are funny sometimes. Like seeing that warning label on a jar of nuts or something that has egg as a main ingredient.

I think there's court cases in America that ruled against the people instead of the restaurants.

exactly. because there's no reasonable expectation or obligation on the part of the propietor to expect perfectly normal foodstuffs to kill someone.

the question of allergies is asked as a courtesy. if you're allergic to something like Gluten, the risk is on you when you walk into a sandwich shop or pizzeria.

Sure. But lying about what's in the food is still bad. And you can get in trouble for that... Though, they might get you for negligence if you mislabeled everything...

When the customer has explained their allergies and asked if it's safe for them to eat there? I can see it for cases where the people assumed they'd be safe and ended up eating something they were allergic to because they didn't do their due diligence, but if they say "I'm allergic to X" and the restaurant still serves them X, I can't see how that would be on the customer. Willingly doing something that you know will endanger somebody's life rarely goes in your favour, after all.

WhiskeyDisk posted...

Eh, that's debatable. Food allergies are becoming quite common, such that anyone running a restaurant can reasonably expect that some of their customers will have allergies. To that end, it's pretty reasonable to expect them to proactively announce at least common allergens that are in their food, especially when those things aren't readily obvious (e.g. you can expect gluten in a loaf of bread, but you might not expect sesame oil or mustard seed). In Canada, food manufacturers are required to specifically identify certain common allergens (such as nuts, eggs, milk, and soy) in their ingredient list, which is really a pretty reasonable expectation to help customers with allergies make informed choices. Food service establishments aren't required to label their products like that, but when it's feasible (such as when there's extra space on the menu and they're in the process of redesigning it anyway), it seems reasonable to me to expect them to do so.
