Like non-anime ones? That's my biggest barrier to the genre. So they're basically just audio books with pictures right? I can dig it if it's not anime style

Oh, I was going to suggest a really good free one called Doki Doki Literature Club! but you seem to mean Western in aesthetic. Aren't most adventure games basically that? There were some really good ones in the past and Double Fine makes some great newer ones.

I am what some would call close-minded, so a title like doki doki literature club is all i need to not try it. Seriously what is up with japan's obsession with school clubs

Also, are you saying Uncharted is like a visual novel?

It's a Western game, it wasn't made by Japanese people.

Consider looking into hidden object games. They are basically visual novels but you have to click on a bunch of things occasionally to move the story along.

Uncharted is action adventure. Adventure is stuff like Myst and Space Quest. It's different from actual visual novels in that you have to explore and solve puzzles though.

He's talking about point and click adventure games like Grim Fandango

so like heavy rain is visual novel-esque?

years ago my weeblord friend would ask me to find japanese VNs online and make it so they'd work on his laptop. i'd have to use my laptop as a test run so i have a couple installed on there. i'm 99% sure they're bad tho based on what i've seen (game testing)

Basically that. You occasionally solve puzzles, but I mean some of the best Japanese visual novels have that too (Zero Escape, Danganronpa, etc.). Still it's primarily story and the puzzles are just there to gate the story though sometimes the puzzles are ridiculous.

Would recommend Night in the Woods, Oxenfree, The Wolf Among Us, and Florence as far as Western visual novels go.

Oh, a lot of "walking simulators" can probably count as visual novels in the sense that they're kind of an audiobook at the same time. Look into Dear Esther for one of the more popular / well reviewed ones.

Gotcha. I also kind of enjoyed the Oxenfree team's next game, Afterparty, but it's still pretty disappointing by comparison.

Walking sims would probably be the closest approximation.

Dear Esther, What Remains of Edith Finch, Gone Home, Firewatch, Virginia, Everybody's Gone To The Rapture...

If you're looking for third-person adventure point-and-click style games in the fashion of The Wolf Among Us, the first two Walking Dead games are great, as well as Life is Strange and its prequel, Life is Strange: Before The Storm. Life is Strange 2 is pretty good as well, but your mileage may vary.

If you're looking for an atmospheric first-person walking sim/puzzler, The Witness is one of the best games I've ever played, cannot praise it highly enough.

Oh and definitely play Oxenfree, it's quite good.

it's not a VN really but I recommend cultist simulator. it's just not structured like a book, but it's very text heavy and low action, most of the "gameplay" consists of reading.

I don't think you're gonna find much non japanese "audiobooks with pictures" since it's just like... not really a thing here? The games that are voiced are higher budget and tend to be more like story-focused adventure games. The games that are more book-like tend to be low budget and can't afford voice acting, or do not consider voice acting important and don't have it

The only walking sim I can think of is Death Stranding.

I've done both walking deads, life is strange. also the back to the future telltale. Will not play before the storm because I already know how their story ends and it's too depressing to think about. Will not play life is strange 2 because it's not max.

I also enjoyed heavy rain, detroit, and somewhat enjoyed beyond. did the first 2 chapters of telltale batman and hated it
