Combat only happens through random encounters with bad guys or as part of the story. The area is a few city blocks worth of space. It makes up for that by having an incredible amount of detail. Gunplay is very limited, and is really only treated as one of several types of weapons you can use. Mostly, you're meant to use your fists in combat.
