It can show passion for the work as well as technical proficiency. Your resume can make reference to things your portfolio demonstrates, if there's something you really want to highlight, but all that should really be on there is "Can use this program," while your portfolio demonstrates in detail your abilities with it. --- This is my signature. People often forget that volunteer or recreational experience can count toward that, provided you can back up the claim (which is what a portfolio is for). Professional experience is still preferred, but provided you can demonstrate that you aren't new to the work you'll be doing, that's points in your favour. --- This is my signature. One job posting had a job posting for 7+ years of experience in a certain language.
