Start with a public option, and in a few decades or so there will be enough support for true universal health care. Non-single payer universal health care seems much more realistic than single payer in a culture like America's. Americans don't even understand health care that well, a lot of them literally think that Obamacare is socialism. They just aren't educated about it. Going for single payer right away AND promising to ban private health insurance is how you get nothing done.
