Which do you prefer?

Some shows are a bit of both, but pick the one you lean more towards.

I don't. It depends entirely on the premise.

I probably would have said serials a decade or so ago, but honestly I'm starting to get tired of all these "prestige TV" shows that take at least one season just to get going. You tend to hear a lot of comments like "it gets really good after a season and a half!" The shows end up getting paced less like shows and more really long movies.

A mixture of both is ideal. A lot of one-and-done episodes and maybe toward the season finales we start getting interesting arcs. Like The Venture Brothers, RIP.

Episodic for comedy, serial for stuff that's more serious.

I think the best format is seasonal arcs.

I think the best format is seasonal arcs.

It was actually a comedy Curb your Enthusiasm that inspired this topic. It's a funny show, but I don't think I can stick with it. Last time this happened was the Office where I stopped at season 5 where I got the same feeling. I need something to look forward to. Something that the series is building up to. I feel like episodic stuff is better back when I had cable, and you're just flipping through the channels looking for something fun to watch. Episodic works because you can watch it out of order. No big deal.
