She died of cardiac arrest with a secondary cause being severely anemicas her parents, 37 y/o Katie Horton and 38 y/o Joey Yozviak were charged with her murder Special Agent Ryan Hilton said Kaitlyn had one of the most severe lice infestation that they ever seen and that it lasted for at least THREE YEARS He believed the repeated bites of the lice sucking her blood lowered her blood iron levels that caused the anemia and triggered the cardiac attack Judge Brenda Trammell agreed that there was enough evidence of second degree murder against the parents to go to a grand jury as well as second degree child cruelty In the initial investigation, the mother said Kaitlyn had NOT BATHED within the last week and a half before she died as agents went to the home and found it filthy and in disrepair with vermin covering the mattress and stuffed animals and other furniture dirty Neighbors said they hadn't seen Kaitlyn playing around for the last month and a half before her death as Family and child services show their 2 other sons were removed It also showed in 2008 when Kaitlyn was born when DFCS opened up a case when the parents REFUSEDto give her up for adoption after initially wanting to when she was born In 2018 Kaitlyn was briefly placed with her aunt before being returned to her parents 6 days later and the agency did not hear from them again until her death. I was going to ask how it could go on for that long, but I've seen video of a severe infestation and the person seemed unbothered. It's vomit inducing.

I believe it was Clara Barton who wrote about unattended wounded soldiers in the Civil War being killed by lice infestations (because they were too weak to try and remove them) so yeah, I knew it could happen.

Sad story. Apparently the parents originally planned to give the child to an adoptive family because the mother didn't work, the father worked for low/min wage, and they wouldn't be able to provide for her.
A married couple was set to adopt her. They had bought everything in preparation of the newborn. They were there for the birth, and the adoptive parents even named the child. Then the mother decided 'nah I'm gonna keep her' and then this happens 12 years later. --- Take me for what I am -- who I was meant to be. And if you give a damn, take me baby, or leave me. ...
