Should the courts go easy on these kids after their sobbing mercy plea?

17 y/o Ohio Teen Jordan Buckley sobbed uncontrollably and begged for mercy and forgiveness from the family of mother of 2, Victoria Shafer, a Photographer who was CRUSHED to death after he and a friend pushed a 74 pound log off a CLIFF!!

The other teen, Jaden Churchheus plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter 2 weeks ago and now Jordan plead the same

He said "I understand that my actions that day has caused your family's life to change. I know that no words that i can speak can bring back your beloved wife, daughter and sister. My hope, from all of this is to use this trauma to learn and live the rest of my life in a way that will honour Ms. Schafer's. I would like to use that experience to prevent others from making a similar mistake. There will not be a day for the rest of my life that i will not think of this tragedy. I hope someday you will find it in your hear to forgive me"

She was a mother of 4 children and owned a photographer studio and was well known in the community as her husband, John said she was exercising her passion for photographer.

Her death was initially ruled an accidnent until a preliminary investigaion discovered evidence that the log was pushed or throw off the cliff which struck her.

She was taking photographs with 5 of her students at Old Man's Cave when the log fell and landed on top of her where she was sitting on a staircase and killed her instantly

Police got a tip that a 16 y/o confessed in a text that he did something really bad at the park with another teen.

After an investigations, the boys were arrested and confessed to pushing it off who said they did it out of "curiosity" and thought it be "funny" according to their FRIEND, Miranda

Prosecutors tried to have them try as adults because they tried to cover it up for a month as they were also DRUNK.

Instead they were tried as serious youth offenders meaning it would be classified as violent offense if committed as an adult

They took a plea deal that reduced charges from murder and reckless homicide and sent back to juvenile hall. A judge has recommended 3-4 and a half years in prison

Should the judge go easy on him after his sobbing beg for mercy?

Absolutely not, they deserve lengthy prison sentences.
Should be charged for underage drinking too, just to add some more time and not let "I was drunk" turn into some sort of excuse.

How severely they are punished should be determined based off whether or not they were aware people were under the cliff or not.

It is a terrible accident way.

She was the mother of two, you say? How terrible for her four children. I hope all eight of them find peace.

mid it was an attraction where people take photos and there was a place to sit below then they either knew or should have known there could be people below.

the log was 74 lbs.

If they were adults the prosecution would have a strong case for murder 2. Reckless homicide. At 16 they know not to do stupid shit like that. They should have been tried as adults in the first place.

Which is just fucking stupid, considering that neither thing justifies ramping up the charges. Conversely, had they mentioned they knew the person was down there and threw it down anything, THAT might justify charging them as adults, but even then what's the point of having the major/minor system if you're going to constantly charge minors as adults?

Not really, no.

Oh? Based on what? Literally any place in the woods can be a place where people take photos so unless they specifically knew people were down there at the time, it's not much of an argument.

Irrelevant.

Because you don't constantly do it. Charging minors as minors is the default, and is exactly what happens in the vast majority of cases. Charging them as adults only happens in particularly egregious cases, which (in a stunning coincidence that NOBODY saw coming) are the cases that are more likely to see national attention and about which you're more likely to hear. You constantly hear about it not because it's more common, but because your sample consists entirely of newsworthy cases.
