Having never played Dark Souls, I think it's a little bit like Dark Souls. I was skeptical of it too, but I think I enjoy the combat more than the older ones. I'm going to have to go all IGN here so I'm sorry, but it's hard to explain otherwise - its really meaty and weighty and you really feeeeeel like a God. Like you know how they've always tried and failed to make a Hulk game because they never managed to make it feel like you're playing The Hulk? It's like a successful version of that. Every time you swing that axe or pick someone up or flip over a house sized boulder there's a weight to it that feels authentic and visceral. The boss fights are designed with that epic sense of scale in mind. Kratos is a god, but he's old, worn out and tired of everyone's shit. You aren't some speedy ninja and you aren't a mindless hulk smashing beast. You're an angry old man who's got God-level kids on his lawn. In less woolly terms The combat is something like a Souls game, but less punishing and with more cool DMC-like combos. There's some QTE-lite events but you rarely feel annoyed by it because the game doesn't often make you mash buttons during a cutscene out of the blue. It's more just that you get these finishing moves that play themselves out and it's fun to watch. Also, the Leviathan Axe mechanic is one of the coolest things to ever happen in a videogame. It's just so clever and fun to throw that thing away and recall it whenever you want. Word of advice: There is no "Best Armor" in the game; it's going to depend entirely on how you choose to play. Shit goes down throughout it with this weird lingering thought of why Kratos is even there. Also the progression of the world and gameplay. It starts off as a Zelda-like and ends up being some wierd mix of Destiny and Dark Souls. God this game was amazing.
