There's a solid chance it was more an executive decision than Sakurai personally wanting to include him, but it's not like there weren't people calling for/expecting Steve to be included before now.

I mean, there are like 60 other characters at this point that play normally. I'm fine with new ones having gimmicks to make them more than minor variations on the same movesets we've been using for 20-odd years.

As a character I think it's pretty cool and makes sense. Minecraft is a huge thing even today and they already have non character fighters like villager.

However as a fighter I'm a bit worried. I DESPISE all the non fluid characters like game and watch. It makes it much more annoying to fight against them for me personally and minecraft steve still has normal minecraft jerky movement. I hope they give him a fun gimmick at least. I still feel like the only "good" fighters from DLC are joker and hero. One as a great competitive character that feels good to move as and attack as and one just an absolute chaotic blast of random nonsense. If they wanna add more chaotic nonsense but give him bad frame data, I'm down, but I'm worried it'll end up more like banjo where it's just annoying as shit to deal with.

Now that I'm over my initial "what the fuck Sakurai?" reaction, he actually looks really interesting and unique, and I'm curious to try this out. It's just he was nowhere near my first pick. I'm not upset or mad or anything about his inclusion, I'm just kinda "meh" to the last couple DLC characters.

My prediction for DLC going forward: We're going to get at least one "big" character that a lot of people want. Like Geno or Crash Bandicoot or Lara Croft or something. We're going to get some "what the fuck?" character that nobody saw coming like Diskun or Mach Rider. We're going to get a Pokemon. My guess is Rillaboom. Because in 4 we got a Gen 6 starter in Greninja. At launch of Ultimate we get a Gen 7 starter in Incineroar. So I think it would make sense if we got a Grass type starter, specifically in the form of Rillaboom since Sword/Shield is current Gen. And for final DLC... idk Marth #10

Steve looks kind of nifty, but I still think he has strong tools to play a time out game, and that's just the worst.
