Best seems subjective so I will go with favorite three in no particular order:

JRPG:
Crono (Chrono Trigger)
Ramza Beoulve (Final Fantasy Tactics)
Terra Branford (Final Fantasy VI).....personally I feel FFVI has multiple protagonists.

WRPG:
The Nameless One (Planescape Torment)
Commander Shepard (Mass Effect series)
JC Denton (Deus Ex).....stealth game with RPG elements?

I think I asked this once in PotD and recalled everyone had their own answers. Nowadays I wanna say roleplay elements have been stretch pretty far into various other genres but very few dedicated RPGs seems to offer you that sense of freedom to do whatever without breaking the game. Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura seems to be one of the few RPGs in my opinion that offers you that freedom within a certain confinement.

Stocke (Radiant Historia)
Daniel Vinyard (Exit Fate)
Shulk (Xenoblade Chronicles 1)
Sagi (Baten Kaitos Origins)
Arnice (Nights of Azure 1)
Riou (Suikoden II) and Freyjadour Falenas (Suikoden V) -- probably the best silent protagonists I've seen

Those are probably the best RPG proagonists I can think of, from what I've played and seen. I hear good things about Velvet from Tales of Berseria, but I haven't checked it out yet.

Oi this is tough because 98% of any RPG I play either has the silent protagonist with almost no personality or it'll have a team of a bunch of premade characters with zero personality at all.

It's not an RPG but I guess I'll say the main dude from Hades is pretty awesome (been playing this a lot lately, the writing and VA work is incredible).

I'll have to think about this question for a bit because nothing's coming to mind immediately (I'm very tired).

True.

Zagrius is excellent. I am stunned at how likable pretty much every character in this game is.

Yuri Lowell (tales of vesperia) is pretty solid. A lot more chilled out and adult compared to the average jrpg guy.

Theres so many that were good but then something ruined them for me like rex and shulk. Special mention of infinite undiscovery protagonist for actually having sex with main heroine at some point in the story although otherwise he was unremarkable.

Man, thinking back a lot of main protagonists in jrpg's suck. Too much bland self insert types or naive children that have their naivety rewarded by plot convenience (like in vesperia where they choose the life of their friend over literally the entirely world. Then it conveniently turned out that it was all lies and there was another way but if there hadn't been, they would have sold out all life on the planet just to not sacrifice their friend who would die anyway when everyone else does).

Hm. Ryza from atelier Ryza was pretty enjoyable even if she fits directly in the naive kid niche. Oh, recette from recettear is funny and nep from neptunia is good as well. Huh, looking at it written down I guess I like female jrpg protagonists more than male. Probably because they are willing to give them an actual personality since they aren't as worried about allowing the main audience to imprint themselves on them.

Adult jrpg games but mercy albalth from daughter of essence (even if occasionally she is a bit TOO bitchy) and main guy (been too long since I played it to remember) from the last sovereign are both great and enjoyable protags.

I can'tt hink of many wrpg characters aside from commander shepard and geralt that aren't create a characters. Geralt is really good, fem shep is fine. Never used male shep.

Noctis. Final fantasy 15.

I think sacrificing yourself for the good of the world is a pretty solid move.
