I thought of The Giver which was required reading in Middle School for me. Good book though!

Romeo and Juliet for High School, which actually was required in High School-- might actually be the right answer too my High School had a bunch of junk as required reading. Like I see several titles in this topic that I've read that are better (not because it was it was required by school is the thing)

I like Catcher in the Rye, although it's not a favorite. Not sure why I thought of it first; probably because it's "less dense." The Grapes of Wrath was my immediate second thought, and one of my favorites, so I wish I had said it instead, since it's not getting any representation here.
