The pain argument is always very flawed, and always from people without much experience. Not that I've taken a bullet, of all things, but you can break a bone and not realize it until the adrenaline wears off, which I have.

Fractured bones are a very different injury and one that is unlikely to be a significant result of bullets. Bullets will actually ricochet off bones to destroy more of your internal organs (which is what most of the damage caused from bullets is).
