i want to upgrade my wireless router but i have like 20 devices and smart plugs and shit and i really dont wanna go in there and change them all

just swapping out a router and keeping the same settings wont work right?

well maybe if i just turn off dhcp on this router, and install a new router behind it... so that all my old devices connect to it, and it all gets sent to the new one

I don't think it's a good idea to plug a router into another router. Switches can be plugged into routers just fine but I don't know what kind of behavior you'll get if you plug in two routers to each other.

My suggestion, log into your current router and get the macs of all your devices then when you set up the new router set up an unencrypted network that uses Mac filtering and add devices to it. You can set up a second SSID that uses a password to add devices to on a slower basis.

Wifi doesn't give two shits about anything other than SSID and password (assuming you are going from WPA2-AES to WPA2-AES) unless you use WPA2 enterprise authentication which requires additional credentials which have to be re-established.

This I've gone through 2-3 routers in the last 10 or so years, all have used the same SSID and password and I've never had to re-login any of my devices.
