I knew nothing about this before watching these documentaries - but damn, this shit was fucked. I didn't think people were this mean and fucked with people so much online before 2010.

consequences will never be the same

I mean - I don't know what's worse? Harassing someone with severe spectrum or harassing a preteen victim of sexual abuse?

Early internet was the ultimate era of being a dick with absolutely fuck all consequences. It was hilarious at the time, but in retrospect it should have been obvious how damaging it could be. So it goes.

I've been using the internet since it was publicly available. 1995 or whatever? I guess I didn't hang out around 4chan or Anonib much - so I didn't get much exposure to that kind of stuff firsthand.
I guess I always felt the harassment was more anonymous and people didn't get doxxed/hacked as much, and it definitely wasn't under the pretense of justice like it is nowadays with digital vigilantism? Maybe people were just as ruthless and cruel back then? I mean some of these trolls literally spent a whole shit-ton of time on this -- more than I ever did arguing with people on forums or making fake Vampirefreaks profiles.

Like I legit find this sadder than stuff like Dear Zachary or Grizzly Man.

I mean - I only knew the really famous cases, and I posted on a toooon of forums back then. Like I said - I just didn't go to places like Anonib/4Chan and wasn't really active in gaming communities or something?

what is the documentary called?

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

doxxing seems a lot more common these days, particularly with political motivations

I guess there was that dude on Vivalavinyl. I can't remember his name? He used to talk about girls looking "yummy as fuck," talked about emo shows in the early '90s and crying all over himself, was very close-minded about stuff like sex, etc. and was harassed a ton there? Someone even pressed a lathe with some of his quotes set to music.
I guess I forgot about that one?

I imagine it was way worse back then than it is now. There's more social networks now but there's much more awareness about cyberbullying

It's just a Youtube series. It's "Chris Chan: A Comprehensive History". It's like 20+ videos, though -- and each one is like 45 minutes. The first 2 or 3 were the most interesting ones. I'm at number 17 right now.
I found it watching videos about Pamperchu and shit.

But the fact that the internet is ever-present and such a big part of everyone's life it's far, far harder to remove something from your history now. So in that sense I think it's way worse - because you can't just walk away from someone doxxing you or catching you doing/saying something dumb and it ruining your life.

Idk it's getting kind of boring fast -- kind of like that Making a Murderer on Netflix (how the hell was that show so many episodes?).
It's really starting to drag on. It got really boring to me once that Liquid Chris got introduced, even though he's a really good impersonator.
