What's the point of eating a damn salad if I'm gonna slather it in ranch like a child who doesn't want to eat their veggies?

Give me your best recommendations for a healthy dressing. Bonus points if it's likely available at most restaurants.

P.S. Out of curiosity, would soy sauce taste okay on a salad?

light ranch is actually way healthier and still tastes good.

oil+vinegar if you want an actual healthy dressing.

you do realize a tablespoon of soy sauce is all the salt you're supposed to have in an entire day right

I mostly eat my salads with yoghurt dressing. You'll have to be a bit careful because yoghurt can also be very sugary and fat, but that's just finding/making the right kind.

first, "you do realize" has always sounded so rude to me. i'm sure you don't mean it that way but it feels condescending

second, no i didn't realize that. but i definitely would not be putting soy sauce on my salad every time I ate one lol. soy sauce is just something i usually have around the house because of unused packets from chinese takeout, so basically it'd be like if I had nothing else to use

let's assume it's a pretty basic restaurant house salad. lettuce and/or spinach with red onions, grated carrots, shredded cheese, you know the drill

Why even ask if it's for a restaurant? They have like 3 choices usually, and they're all unhealthy

Real talk - if we are talking about restaurants, your only option is going to be a basic vinaigrette or no dressing.

If you're eating at home you can probably find some sort of low fat and light calorie dressing from the store. Even then a basic vinaigrette is probably still healthier.

I haven't tried just plain soy sauce on a salad, but I have had a really good soy sauce-based dressing before:

(probably not healthy though)

I am so inexperienced in the world of salad dressings that I don't even know what kind of dressings a restaurant would have (or how many)

However, I might start eating salads at home so it's still good to know about a dressing if it's something I could only have at home.

there's no such thing as a tasty dressing that's also healthy.

I did switch to no dressing a few months ago. It takes a while to get used to, but also it's kind of interesting actually tasting things like cucumbers and carrots instead of dressing.

soy sauce is not good for you

btw I just tried putting a packet of soy sauce on a salad

honestly most of it just flows through the salad and sits at the bottom so you don't even get all of it, and it just makes the salad taste a bit saltier. about half of the bites may as well have been dry. it was okay i guess but it's definitely only if I have nothing else to put on it.

i only did this / was curious about it because I had a side salad in the fridge left over from last night but didn't have any dressing except ranch and so i experimented

I didn't mean to sound condescending, I was just thrown off by you asking for healthy options and then suggesting a salt bomb right after

Some sort of vinaigrette then would be the best choice. There are lots of different ones to try, but if it's a restaurant, just ask them what dressings they have.

I personally prefer to just use things like seeds or nuts to give the salad some extra flavor over any type of dressing.

Soy sauce based dressing is what I'd recommend (and it's fine for you as long as you're not drowning the salad in sauce tbh)

soy + lime juice + honey + grated ginger + grated garlic + sesame oil

A little vinegar tastes great on like every veggie, so that's not true. Any bit of oil you can add to it makes it better, and salt and spices and such too. So you can make it as low fat as you want. But still just plain old vinegar is great.
