That is still a ton of money for playing a game... 34 games in a season, so what if we did a little (rough) math? An average game is apparently 2.5 hours long. That means that just playing (no practicing or training), a WNBA team will have about 85 hours of play time. Each team has at least 10 players - so if each player got equal play time, that would mean each player gets 42.5 hours per season.

That means in about a standard work week, a player makes $75k. That is about $1764/hour.

That money comes from TV deals largely which the players are then able to negotiate with the owners for a piece of. If more people watched the WNBA there would be more money for the women.

Theyre playing the same sport but thats not equating to the same generation of revenue. This isnt like a man and a woman doing the same job at a company and generating the exact same amount of money for said company.

just more dumb american stuff.the WNBA doesn't bring in anywhere near the amount of money the NBA does, nor in the opinion of many is it interesting.its not sexism, its just how it is.people just aren't drawn to it.......its not that the women aren't talented, because they are,it just doesn't catch the interest of millions of people.also, its one of those "women should get whatever men get situations." even if sue bird was paid that kind of money like lebron james,i'm sure the team owners would see that its being wasted as people aren't rushing in to see seattle storm games.........

I dunno what shes trying to accomplish exactly but thats just such an obvious point. You cant get paid more than your team draws in a year. Thats dumb.

It's not just the team, it's the entire WNBA league that can't draw the viewership.

That's on them for not going out and trying to attract more viewers.

NBA is not responsible for that.

According to this take, the job doesnt require practices, their own training on the side, press interviews, promotional appearances, charitable work through WNBA Cares, etc.

Im 100% on the side of its a ridiculous argument that they deserve equal pay, but this take is a horrible take.

what can make the WNBA more popular, if anything?

I don't watch sports, so idk.

someone in an earlier post said something about women's soccer, and in the US at least, it's pretty popular (at least during the World Cup & the Olympics), but I dunno any other women's sports besides tennis that have many people caring about them.

Why should the NBA provide ANYTHING to the WNBA at this point.

WNBA is a mature organization, they're past the point of needing "Seed Money".

They should be able to survive on their own and Re-Pay the NBA for all the debt that they incurred starting their own organization.

The WNBA should be THANKFUL to the NBA for giving them the funding to start up.

@g0ldie

I really dont know if there is a way to make it more popular. The skill level is simply a lot lower than the NBA, so it looks vastly inferior by comparison.

Womens soccer is popular in the US when the World Cup rolls around because the women are actually competitive. Americans are very jingoistic, so the fact that they (we) can use it as a means to say were #1 at something is appealing. At the same time, womens soccer isnt popular at any other time in America, to be frank.

Womens tennis actually has something to offer, in that the power aspect of the mens game can make the points come quickly, so there arent nearly as many long volleys. And the volleys can be quite fun to watch in tennis, so in that regard, womens tennis has something to offer thats a part of the game and is entertaining.

And thats really what it comes down to. In basketball, what can the women do that sets it aside from the men, and at the same time, is that difference entertaining? The answer is... no such thing exists that sets it apart while being entertaining.

Its the same deal with the CFL vs NFL. Why would you ever go see a CFL match up when you could watch NFL instead. I'm sure the WNBA players are very talented, but they aren't nearly as marketable as the NBA players, especially Jordan, Lebron James, and Shaq. I can't even name a single WNBA player.

Blame it on marketing.
