(about halfway through the pace slows down to only cover a chapter an episode, but each individual one piece chapter has so much more text than other shounens it's never been much of an issue for me, but it is a big deal for others. Really it's no different from DBZ having people stare at eachother for long periods of time when surprising events happen. The animation suffered too after the timeskip. It was at its roughest part during the Dressrosa arc, but it started to recover after that going into Zou and Whole Cake Island. Then once we hit the current arc in Wano they completely changed the art style to be more like that of the most recent Broly movie and its some of the best the series has ever looked.)

Yes. It's so good. Everything before the halfway point is basically 10/10, and everything after is a 9, sometimes dipping to an 8. When the pacing drops, you can watch fan recuts or read the manga. It's totally worth it.

It was the first anime my wife ever watched.

She caught up and immediately started over again cause she loved it so much.

No anime she has tried since has been able to compete.

It's also my favorite series of all time. So I'm going to say yes.

Also compared to Bleach and Naruto it has much less filler and no long filler arcs.

If youre really that curious id recommend reading it. The anime takes an absurd amount of hours has no issue wasting your time episode after episode. Mangas much more concise (relatively lol) and Odas art is way better than Toeis animation.

You'd watch them no hesitation , right?

I didnt enjoy it, but its pretty popular so you can give it a shot. Just be aware it has nearly 1,000 episodes and there are chunks where it slows to a crawl as if adapting a whole 2 pages an episodes. Its also not finished and will probably have at minimum another 5 years worth of episodes if that matters

It's very worth watching up to a point - the anime drops really hard past a certain point.

The manga is history in motion and will likely go down as both the best and most successful story to ever come out of Japan so uh, yes please at least read it.

I will agree that reading the manga is better than the anime up until the current arc. Now Oda is leaving stuff for the anime to fill in later in order to get through more.

I'm 600 episodes deep, so I'd hope so. Otherwise I've wasted a lot of time over the years.

The pacing definitely takes a noticeable dip at a certain point, but if you consume it like I do (basically popping in for an arc or two every once in a while in between other things), it's really not that bad IMO. It's not even over yet, so there's no rush to get through it.

if you can make it through Dressrosa you can look forward to an improving quality to the anime after that

granted I have no idea what that would even be like watched as one big chunk since I've been on weekly since Thriller Bark.

I completely agree that it's the greatest work of fiction ever told.

The anime has some pacing problems, I'm not going to deny that. Some arcs handle it very well, others not quite as well. Early on they made short filler arcs. These are never very long and never all too bad. One of them is actually really good. Later, the approach has been to basically adapt a chapter per episode, so the show never catches up. In some arcs, you hardly feel this, as they do a great job as just expanding the scenes and creating great atmosphere. In other arcs, this makes it feel a bit slow. This is not a big problem, if you're binge watching it, but can be if watching it on a weekly basis as it came.

The manga is basically as perfect as anything can be, which is especailly impressive for a series as long as One Piece is. I have followed the series for many years, both manga and anime, and the length has never been a problem to me (I caught up in a couple of months when the series had like... 400 something chapters IIRC. It has a lot of depth and everything is throughfully thought out and adds together. Arcs that came out a decade apart seems like they were written at the same time because everything is tied together beautifully and the worldcuilding is perfection. Of course, it wouldn't be the best thing ever if the indiciual arcs were not also always fantastic stories in themselves, but they are. I could go on forever here, but the answer to the topic title is definitely yes.

i completely disagree its the greatest work of fiction ever told.

One Piece is an insanely impressive epic and theres nothing else like it but come on. Formulaic arcs, cookie cutter characters, consistently low stakes, etc. The series is extremely surface level, which of course it is its made for adolescent Japanese boys. Im excited to see how Oda brings this grand undertaking together as the series nears its last leg. But imo the series has gotten too big for its britches. The charm and romance of early OP, especially between the straw hats, feels completely absent. The same gags get old over 2 decades

Eh i guess i get where you people are coming from. Its really cool to see a tale this long and consistent and fucking big come together. But greatest work of fiction? Thats just like ignorant man its not even the greatest shonen ever told

I started rewatching at some point and some of the early filler is bad. Some of the late filler too. It's almost a thousand episodes and has a habit of doing things like recapping every main character's backstories for a few episodes at a pivotal moment in case you forgot. And the pacing slowed to less than a manga chapter an episode as they scrambled to not overtake it. But the fights are good, the characters are good, the animation was good at some point, the music is good. In short, maybe reading the manga is better, but there are reasons to watch the anime at least partially.

DBZ? Really? That's your counterpoint? When you named OP for having formulaic arcs or cookie-cutter characters? Seriously?

I'm caught up on the manga, and watched half the anime... and my thoughts are no, it's not.

The first half is pretty good at best. It does have some cool moments, and the characters are great.

The last half has been... Pretty bad, especially in the anime where the pacing is absolutely awful.
