Heres a quote from the silent hill 4 one

Q42. Is Cynthia a prostitute?
She looks and acts like she could be, but I doubt it. Her extra costume really makes her look like one, though. She just seems to be a flirt, however. And she does seem pretty dirty, but hell, I'd still hit it.

Most of the guides were written by oily 13 year olds who hoped for the Tomb Raider nude code to be real.

Is the expectation for them to be keenly aware of deep rooted sexism that they themselves were influenced by?

@sballen

Were you aware of this?
I saw the article when it was posted. It's unfortunate that they are doing what we always joke that old people do with consoles (calling them all "Nintendos") and referring to all older guides written by fans as "GameFAQs" instead of just "game FAQs", since people who just read the title and not the article will assume we did something horrible when the article's only about guides written by other people. It is what it is. It's also just clickbait as well considering their take is "people in the 90s weren't as PC as they are today" which I don't think anyone would disagree with.

Well, to be fair, don't you like give gift certificates when people write said guides? Or used to?

But yeah, he definitely targetting the brand. Wonder if that will rattle any feathers at CBSi and you guys have a stern talk with vice.

Then again, maybe vice is in the same boat and this is just a user submitted article from their side .

I been fighting this fight here >_>. I bitch about you guys rating women pretty regularly. Stuff definitely didn't change. As there's very little resistance in the way of the objectification of women. Pretty much just me yelling into the void and a couple others here and there that probably just don't speak up more because it seems a waste of energy. A lot of you definitely needed more women role models in your life growing up or something. Maybe you refused to see women as role models and cut that at the root tho.

Not that I don't have my transgressions and am a perfect example all the time. But some you guys really got nothing better to do.

I dunno about you but I constantly am in my head where I'm deciding if I want to defend women and come off unlikable or just let it go. I genuinely feel like defending against objectifying women here makes you come off unlikable to the crowd. I don't dislike people here, I just feel that this particular area has a whole lot of enabling. Users I like and respect are amongst them. And there's others I respect here, where I see them only commenting respectfully, and I feel like they just wouldn't want to come off whiney or unlikable by commenting on it overall. People right now are probably liking me less as I rant lol. And I will get no benefits off these rants. But it just is what it is. I'm not one to hold back how I feel rather I'm right or wrong.

I think labelling this article as clickbait is dismissive and misses the point that people's cringy guides were partly the result of games and media marketing themselves in ways that nurtured and encouraged these guide makers to act this way.

The "clickbait" aspect is the inaccuracy of calling out "the site" rather than "the writing", which there is a distinction between.

For one, we may think of GameFAQs as the last great bastion of text guides on the Internet, but back in "the day", it was one of dozens of available text-based sources. Game Winners, Cheat Planet, CheatCC, Game Advice, Console Domain, Happy Puppy, Cheat Stop and so on. GameFAQs didn't even invent the concept. All of these sites were active in the late 90's/early 2000's. The era that the writer speaks of was a mire of different sources.

Naming the site in the title as the "source" belies that a finger could be pointed in one direction, at the owners, operators, and management. Calling out the writing, and by extent, the community, is a much muddier adversary and harder to sell an article on. GameFAQs as a site never promoted or encouraged, let alone created, the culture of sexism in gaming.

What the writer of the article is doing is taking a trip down memory lane and realizing the signs were there back then, and that those signs are etched into the record of cringe because those guides will remain on the Internet as they are until the end of the site, and.... well duh, I guess.

It's rough to find evidence of a time when we were younger and stupider but that's history and the importance of preserving it.

He found, preserved in amber, an ancient symptom of a current disease, a disease which became a pandemic in summer of 2014, so to say "hey look over here at this vector" rings hollow when we're long into having mapped out the genome of the fuckery that is the gamer community.

It's a little weird to single out GameFAQs, but then, it still exists and it sounds like the author of the piece actually used this site, so that would explain.

In any case, there's always been a ton of sexism here, casual and not-so-casual, and I'm sure it exists to an extent in every male-dominated space, because it's a societal issue.
