Would you support student debt relief in exchange for community/public service?

Just saw this

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/10/23/biden-proposes-forgiving-10000-in-student-debt-for-public-service.html

Debt relief for nothing would be one thing, but if the people getting the relief actually work for it?

I've done charity work and helped my local food bank in the past while holding down a full time job, so it's far from impossible to do

Yes in some cases, but most people wont have the time to do that enough to pay it all off. Theyre already essentially working jobs to pay it off. The entire system needs to be reformed.

Fuck that. You might as well work and pay it off with monthly payments. Sleepy Joe is silly!

We already have that.

Its called the GI Bill. (yes I know this isn't how the GI bill works)

There's also programs where you can earn your degree for free in exchange for X amount of years as a commissioned officer.

We already have a similar path. Ten years of public service results in student loan forgiveness. It looks like Biden is proposing 10K of forgiveness per year up to five years.

Honestly either work for me. We need more avenues for young adults to get rid of crippling student debt.

The plan is to forgive 10k of loans for every year you work for the government or certain non-profits. Its not like a volunteer somewhere on the weekends kind of thing.

There are issues with the current system though. The first year that it could apply to someone was last year I think, and about 1% of people who applied actually got it. If youve had a late payment or if youve been paying it off in any way besides a very specific repayment option, youre boned.

Avoiding student loan debt is a big reason why I would highly encourage young adults join the military out of highschool, before college.

You can earn credits boot camp, credits from A-School, etc. There is Tuition Assistance and the GI Bills. There are programs to earn certifications and complete apprenticeship programs.

Too many people sleeping on what a benefit a few years in the military can provide.
