Space missions open the door for colonization, and even terraforming. The issue is beyond the fact that I'm sure Trump is lying and no advances would take place under his term, in the event that they did it's a movement that would only benefit the most elite.

Imagine Earth being uninhabitable within the next 40 years. What kind of status would it take to live in a fully temperature controlled space colony?

It'll never happen under Trump, but it would likely be a good step seeing as launching things from the moon would be immensely cheaper than from Earth. Though there needs to be a way of producing a rocket from materials on the moon for it to be viable.

That is quite literally the current plan by NASA. In part because it is far more fuel efficient to start a mission from the moon than it would be from earth.

Now that we can land and reuse rockets, trips to exit the atmosphere should not be nearly as expensive. Rocket tech has advanced in a big way recently.

NASA is planning a moon base as a launching point for manned Mars missions. SpaceX is interested in space tourism and resource mining, which could be beneficial in the long run for humanity. Utilizing the private sector has helped space tech quite a bit.
