A lot of people in 2016 mistakenly, bewilderingly, but genuinely thought he was a moderate. I think a lot of people gave him the benefit of the doubt on a lot of the crazy shit he said because either 1) they genuinely believed the media was misrepresenting what he said as trust in news networks were eroding and 2) people often went with the "he was probably joking" defense because Trump did tell a lot of jokes when speaking, especially in the primary. And in some ways it endeared him to people. The people who were "tricked" in 2016 are the same people who are going to be "tricked" in 2020. It's not that they are actually being tricked, it's that there's motivated reasoning going on. People, by-and-large, voted in a racist fascist because that is who they wanted in charge. It's bleak, but once you accept it, things start to become a whole lot less confusing. Trump's "upset" wasn't an upset, he scrapped by incredibly small margins in states that disproportionately matter.
