The more damage he endured, the less human he seemed to be. Moving much more rigidly, very slowly. Like the little bit of humanity he had left within him was being extinguished every time he rose up after being "killed." To the point that by the very end of the movie, his burning body continues to stalk Laurie, until it physically gives out. Like the corporeal vessel for "the Shape" could no longer maintain itself; not so much that Michael Myers died, but that the evil was deprived of its host.
