imagine buying a tv with 54% failure rate and the manufacturer is like "ok we'll fix it as many times as it needs to be fixed in a 3 year period. but we will not replace it with a newer model. sorry you have to keep the model with the permanent defect. get ready to have fun when 3 years is up."

gaming consumers get so royally fucked by weak ass fanboys who defend these companies.

The Microsoft fan boys really bent over and provided extra lube during that time.

To the point they felt like a beaten by their domestic partner and gave up on the one.

it was actually a >90% failure rate on the ones made during the first 2 years of the generation, some of them just took a lot longer to buckle

it was an inherent heatsink design flaw or something, they were actually made aware of it pre-launch but sent them out anyway

The flaw was with the soldering. There was a recently passed law making lead solder illegal and so alternatives were going through some growing pains. The solder they use would expand when the Xbox was used and then crack during cooling. Repeat this process enough times and eventually two soldered joints touch and game over for Xbox.

Playstation 3 had the same problem but lasted much longer.

They were like ticking time bombs imo. Work for a while then you either have to wait a couple weeks to get one that would get out or pay for a refurbished one that would also crap out

Probably the worst and least reliable console I ever had

That was an urban legend, but for the PS3 anyway it was recently shown that almost all failures were due to a subset of bad capacitors.

I'm sure it was refurbished but I sent mine in because the disc drive busted and said it was RRoD, they sent me a "new" like model that lasted the rest of its active life. I think they had a permanent fix by then.

I was genuinely shocked at how long mine lasted.

Got it for Christmas 2006. RROD in March 2010.

That thing was on nearly 24/7 for like two months when Halo 3 came out.

It red ringed while watching the last season of Heroes on Netflix

They were all bad. At least the initial ones. Mine died halfway through mass effect 3. Took that sucker apart, fixed it, couldn't put it back together, but still finished the game. That's the last I played that piece of junk.

My original model lasted right around 3 years. I replaced it with the 360 S model a decade ago (which has seen way more use) and its still doing fine.

Same thing happened with the PS2, which a lot of people seem to have forgotten. The original model of the PS2 was fucking garbage-- mine & everyone I knew all broke at least once within a year or so of purchase. After sending mine back to the factory twice for the disk read error, I just said fuck it when it broke a third time-- by then the Slim model had come out, so I just replaced it.

exept the source for the "23.7%" claim specifically says their data only shows malfunctions directly reported to them and that due to MS policy there is under reporting of RRoD to them.

i like how the loyal xbots still try to defend MS, when even MS themselves acknowledged game informers survey results while NEVER disputing the figures. the failure rate of the problematic launch models were probably even higher than 54%.

The 1st console that RRoD on me, I reported to microsoft and I sent it to them and they sent me a new console.
The 2nd one it was after that window of time where they'd replace it so I never reported it to them.
