...and I think it might be the best game I've ever played. Yes, I'm aware it's an old game.

I impulsively purchased a PS4 during quarantine because I was going crazy stuck in the house but no game piqued my interest, despite trying mightily. Witcher 3 seemed to scratch that itch. I think reading the books helped as it created the universe in my head preemptively.

If you've been on a video game hiatus, what are some games that brought you back?

Most games after not playing for 10 years would be enjoyable I'd imagine. I've not been on a hiatus since I started playing video games around 30 years ago so I wouldn't really know.

I found the witcher frustrating. Getting 1 xp for completing older quests didn't sit right, and I hated that if you do some quests out of order without realizing it that it can prevent you from future quests. Maybe I should go back to it and finish but I dunno. I didn't like gwent either. Frankly I hate card games in general, save go fish and uno. Just a personal opinion that you don't have to agree with. But I am glad you are enjoying the game. I can see why lots of people do.

I too took a ten year hiatus from gaming, and the last of us brought me back. I was like 'I can't believe this is what I've been missing', but then no game I've played since has met that expectation.

I've owned The Witcher 3 on pc and PS4 for years and haven't touched it yet. I tried to play Witcher 1 years ago and dropped it after a few hours. I'd like to give the series a fair shake, but maybe I should just start with W3?

That's good to hear! Also some major shifts on my end and me too coming out I think much better off.

Long story short, I ended up dating my lifelong childhood crush. I'll just say this: never meet your idols.

Maybe I should make a topic about this?

I haven't played the others, played 3 and didn't feel lost. It's a good place to start it seems.

You definitely don't need to play the previous Witcher games. I did have some backstory of characters/the world from reading the books, but it's really not necessary since it's separate stories.

The same thing happened for me. I bought the definitive edition for the switch and tried playing it awhile back but couldn't get into it. Then, with the quarantine I gave it another shot and fell in love with it. I even bought a handcrafted gwent board and card game because of my addiction. Now I've been in a video game mode again recently. I had all but stopped playing years ago until the pandemic hit. Although Breath of the Wild was really able to pull me back in for a good while too.

Neat. I heard the 1st game has much clunker mechanics than the latter 2 in the series, too. Maybe I'll finally give it a chance once I finish Persona 5 Royal!

I recently got a PS4 myself and have been catching up on a lot of games I missed. Still haven't gotten to The Witcher III yet though. Some of my favorites for PS4 have been God of War, Red Dead Redemption II, The Last of Us Part II, Metal Gear Solid V, Resident Evil VII, NieR Automata, Spider-Man, and Ghost of Tsushima.

Some of the games I tried before Witcher got its claws in were Read Dead 2, God of War, Street Fighter V, one of the COD games and NBA 2K20. Random ass assortment, I know, but I was trying my hardest to get back into gaming.

The one that almost got me was Red Dead 2. And that was only because I have a fascinating with lever action rifles. In the end, it just seemed to shallow or something. Can't really explain.

Yeah, once you get used to it, the combat is... serviceable. Not exactly high praise, but it gets the job done well enough that I found it easy enough to look past it to enjoy the game's fantastic narrative. The Witcher series does player choices right: You don't have a clear morality system to follow, just decisions and plausible consequences to those decisions. I particularly like that it makes a point of assigning consequences to choosing to stay neutral in many cases, so that "I'm just going to stay out of this problem" still feels like a meaningful decision that changes the world around Geralt.

And if you make the right decisions, you get to bang random ladies and collect them as trading cards. Because reasons.

I'm having a difficult time choosing between what kind of build I want to move forward with.

A part of my wants to go full on sage, but in the books Geralt isn't really too powerful at magic...so it just feels wrong.

I got the potion of clearance and have all my points available to respec, but it's causing me to just not touch the game because I can't make a decision. This happens to me every time I pick up an RPG it seems.
