About 20% into that game there's an epic scene on a bridge that is thrilling to experience for the first time, from the story, the direction, the audio, the way it looked, and how it felt in my hands. It's not just the technology. The boot-up sound, the UI... even the aesthetic of the console (like it or loathe it) with the lights that bounce off the white fins, looks like the outside of my local Cineworld. It feels premium. Over the last five years, PlayStation has established this identity as the purveyor of huge, expensive blockbuster games, and PS5 is the console manifestation of that. For studios making those sorts of experiences, and gamers who enjoy those products, this machine is purpose built for them. https://www.ign.com/articles/playstation-5-review I thought that was going to be the game-changing feature of the PS5, but to my surprise its really the DualSense controller that boasts the biggest potential. It may feel fairly similar to the DualShock 4 at first touch but it didnt take me long to realise its really an incredibly impressive new beast entirely. Largely the same shade of white as the console itself, the DualSense is just a fraction larger than the DualShock 4 and has a more premium look, particularly in the translucent buttons which have an almost glass-like appearance. The Options and Create buttons are also more raised than they are on the DualShock 4 so theyre far easier to find without blindly rubbing your thumb beside the touchpad until you find it, or glancing down (the Create button is basically the PS5s equivalent of the PS4s Share button). The DualSense also has a built-in mic, making headsets unnecessary, but it still has a 3.5mm jack for those who prefer to use them. The charging port is USB-C. *The range of haptic feedback the DualSense can provide is quite astonishing.* However, its whats on the inside that makes all the difference and the range of haptic feedback the DualSense can provide is quite astonishing. Nuanced rumble travels from palm to palm and with a wide spectrum of effects, from almost imperceptible pulsations to massive vibrations. The triggers not only buzz with force feedback like the Xbox One controller, but also fight back and introduce a brand-new layer of immersion. Its seriously remarkable. -For those of you nursing injuries or with conditions that would make some of these new features less than ideal, they can be scaled back or toggled off. The pre-installed Astros Playroom is a pretty wonderful tech demo for the DualSense and well worth experimenting with its a rich and fabulous demonstration of the new level of feedback the DualSense can output, and an adorable tour through PlayStations long hardware history to boot. For a hardware generation jump thats currently muddied with a lot of cross-gen content and an overall feeling of something more incremental than the often seismic shifts weve experienced previously, the DualSense has emerged to me as a bit of a revelation. Ive had to plug it in to charge every second day since getting the PS5, but its worth it. *For the Players* In the power stakes theres been a role reversal this generation, with Microsofts new Xbox Series X arriving with reportedly 20% more grunt than the PS5. That said, its a bit of a meaningless figure until we can properly examine how the Series X and PS5 cope with the same third-party games head to head. Regardless of the apparent power disparity, however, 4K/60fps experiences are poised to be more regular on PS5, just as they are on Series X. PS5 has the fresh OS but it's also missing stuff like USB backups, VRR, folders and themes. Also doesn't support Quick Resume. Biggest downside for both is Xbox controller doesn't have fancy tech and PS5 has a smaller SSD but I wouldn't say either is a big deal. Compared to what we had before with launch consoles. Switch barely being able to do anything (still a bit shitty in that area). Xbox One being slow as molasses installing games and bundling Kinect. PS4 being half baked where you couldn't even suspend the console like advertised. Wii U taking three god damn hours to get the system ready. PS3 never really being as gaming feature friendly as the 360.
