https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2020/11/sadly_you_cant_store_ps5_games_on_an_external_hdd

As our PlayStation 5 review outlined earlier in the day, theres currently no way to store next-gen games on an external HDD. While weve always known that youll need to use the SSD to boot PS5 titles, many had hoped that youd be able to move games across to a separate storage unit should you need to save space. At the time of writing, thats not the case.

While you can move PlayStation 4 games backwards-and-forwards between the SSD and an external HDD, the same option does not apply to next-gen software. This is disappointing and something we hope Sony fixes, because depending on your Internet connection, its always going to be quicker to transfer from a USB storage device than downloading games all over again.

And thats not to mention those people who have bandwidth caps to contend with!

No my statement is completely real and true. Consoles have literally nothing to offer gaming and hold it back in many ways. They only survive on moneyhatted exclusives which would be made for everyone if the Sonys of the world didn't hoard them like greedy dragons.

Apparently that only applies to PS4 games.

You CAN store Xbox Series Games on a standard External Drive, you just cant play the games from it

IE; you need to move the games to system memory/Memory Card to play, but if Download is too problematic, you can store them.

tbh, I used to never really think about external HDDs, but I got one for my PS4 about a month ago, and it's a game changer

it's dope not having to uninstall stuff so you can play new games, and then have to re-install when you want to play something older.

so I'm pretty disappointed by this, but I think that it'll be something that will be added later on (hopefully)

Also at least with the PS4, depending what model you have games actually load/run quicker and better when stored on an external >_>

But the fact they're plug + play on any PS4 you sign into with your account as well...and while you can only have 1 plugged in at a time, you can use as many as you want so you (theoretically) have infinite storage...this is just so dumb.

I don't really know anything about external HDDs (I have a laptop & never used one before), but yea, bought a 2 TB Seagate external HDD for my PS4 Slim, and some of the load times have seemed quicker

It's because the PS4 Phat and the PS4 Slim both only use SATA II for the internal drive, so a SATA III HDD connected via the USB 3.0 ports will be faster. It's actually pretty amusing how many tests of different setups you can find online.

You can play ps4 games without it being on an external hard drive, if that's what your trying to say.

People complained that the Xbox Series X OS hasn't changed but stuff like this is a downside when they start from scratch.

Can't you just delete the games when you're done with them and redownload them later if you want to play? You can do that now on ps4.

Yeah.

But just to go back to an example I keep using for moving files around, DBZ Kakarot is around 55 GB and on the PS4 Pro takes less than 10 minutes to move in either direction (internal -> external or vice-versa). On the PS5 something like that would ostensibly be even quicker.

But downloading it though? Significantly longer than that, not to mention it swamps my connection and makes everything else slow as shit so I can really only download games overnight or when no one is home.

E: I deleted AC Odyssey and pretty much acknowledged I was never going to play it again, because the base game is only ~50 GB but it's more than double that size with all the DLC
