I'd say CT was shutting again, but we never really re-opened.

The governor of my state tried to enact a mask mandate a couple weeks ago, and the local DA told him to fuck himself. What the hell happened to this country

Masks shouldn't be controversial. Surgeons wear masks all the time so it should pretty apparent they are useful. And when did going around spreading disease become so acceptable? People used to excuse themselves from events and refuse to share food when they had a slight cold.

The sad thing is that there are places like Japan where people are allowed out and given suggestions rather than mandates, and their rates of disease or death are far lower per capita than countries in western civilization. Absolutely there are stupid people in this scenario, but the entire handling is to play as well.

The problem was early on the CDC (I think CDC - can't remember which exact organization) said the masks were useless and didn't provide protection. I think what they meant to say was that the masks don't protect YOU, they protect others from getting the infection. Then they came back a month later and said masks should be mandatory. Anyone with any reading comprehension shouldn't have an issue with what was originally said - but you know how it is these days.

Americans really don't like being told what to do, the government should have used reverse psychology and told Americans they can't wear masks

they werent told what to do

they were told masks were a good idea, and nearly every other country in the world looked at the information, used common sense, and worked together to mitigate the spread of the virus

way too many people are proud of their indignant and willfull ignorance, so now a lot of people ARE going to be told what to do, and if they dont want to listen then I look forward to hearing them bitch about getting fined or facing other consequences of their stupid ass choices

I agree it's stupid, I wear a mask everywhere and think they're being babies about it, but it was bound to happen given the way a lot of Americans are

It was never really going to be any other way.

No matter how often the armchair pundits keep insisting that all we had to do is fully shut down for 6 weeks and everything would magically be better, that's not really how any of this works.

I spelled out exactly how all of this was going to go back in March. I've been pretty much right every step of the way. It's been painfully obvious to anyone paying attention - the problem is, most people don't pay attention. Or they just hope for the most optimistic possible scenario and then get blindsided when it doesn't pan out.

And no matter how much people want to jump on Trump and criticize him for every single thing he does (and all the things he doesn't do), it's not like things would have been all that much different if Clinton had been President and pushing her own policy. The only thing any federal or state government was ever going to be able to do was shut down enough to flatten the curve to keep hospitals from being overwhelmed while waiting for a potential vaccine and more effective treatment to come along. While also having to counterbalance keeping enough running so people still have access to essential services, and the economy limps along enough so that we don't all come out of quarantine into a post-apocalyptic wasteland where a ton of businesses have gone completely bankrupt and a lot of people are permanently unemployed.

At BEST, if things were done differently you might have a scenario where minor tweaks could have been made, different bailout or stimulus plans could have been created, or some form of debt forgiveness could have been implemented - but the broad brushstrokes were never going to change no matter who was in charge or what they tried to do.

It has been other ways in plenty of other countries that have managed this far better than the US has. Pinning that entire failure on Trump is wrong (there's a lot he could have done better, but he's never had the power to stop it from being a major problem), but too many American people simply have not responded to this crisis the way they needed to, instead resisting the necessary public health measures.

Still having the virus does not mean not doing better.

This very much is not a binary matter. There's plenty of room to do better than the US while still having cases.
