A base metabolism varies from person to person depending on numerous factors (genes, height and current weight, ratio of muscle and fat, dietary habits, etc.). For the average, healthy person, it might be in the 1400-1600 range to eat that many calories and retain the same weight without exercising.

Right metabolism makes up a part of it to but the body burns calories just by doing the things it must do to keep us alive. Again this is why we need food+water as fuel to keep that process going.

maybe, but the average is a bit higher than that. an average person who is moderately active burns roughly 2600 calories a day.

Define average here. Or moderately active. And also, that is quite the claim regarding 2600 a day; one I'll need to ask your source on.

...What do you think basal metabolic rate refers to?

I don't think you can burn 2200 calories in an hour even at full sprint.
on average you burn 2000 kcal a day just living. Burning an additional 200+ from a work out is anything but far fetched.

That's per day, yes, but party animal was saying in an hour.

*Searches that site and has trouble finding exactly as you are stating*

The best I can find there is the recommended or general pattern of 2000 kcal a day, as if the average we've been told over the years by media and schools alike was founded on something.
