Just saw the announcement that a PS5 version is releasing and I may start playing this. Did the thing where they're making the starting stuff way faster already happen or is that still incoming?

The entire thing is $30 on PSN right now which seems buts, but I also don't know if there's still a monthly fee or not.

theres a monthly fee, but i believe you can get a 'trial edition' which is the entire main game and first full expansion with unlimited playtime until you spend money on the game

once you spend money on the game though, you gotta pay the monthly fee

There will always be a monthly fee as long as the game exists. They've been very emphatic about that and not at all wanting to do a free to play model because they believe it would damage the quality of the game.

And yes the ARR streamline already happened.

I will def still try it out, it's not a deal breaker, and I haven't touched the game since early ARR.

Is the $30 complete price right now an abnormality, or is it on sale like that often?

Reasonably often, plus as mentioned above - as long as you dont spend anything you can get through the entire base game and first expansion (with a few restrictions on partying up and whatnot).

It's on sale fairly often but by that I mean like, once every few months. They'll probably put it on sale again in May or so when the next stream is.

But yeah I actually forgot Heavensward is free now too.

Note that if you want to play the free trial, I don't think you can buy the game beforehand. Not even sure you'll be able to get the free trial if you've played in the past, but it depends on the account you use I guess? The free trial is for unlimited time and contains the original game and the first expansion, which is a bit more than half the existing content - probably 120-150 hours worth if you just do the main quests and the important sidequests for one class.

Buying the game will come with one free month. I was able to play all the existing main story and main quest content for one class in a bit under two months back in August-September, though I played a lot (around 300 hours), so I ended up paying for one subscription month. It'll take a lot longer if you try to do all the side quests, but the generic sidequests generally aren't that interesting (the game marks a difference between important sidequests and generic ones, though even some of the important ones can be skipped, like the early ultimate weapon quests, since they just give you gear that will be obsolete before you even get it, haha).

Is there content IN the base game trial, like classes/jobs, that you won't be able to access compared to buying it, or is the actual content of the trial identical to if I purchase the complete set?

You lose access to some social systems with the trial. The biggest one is probably that you can't buy stuff from the marketplace, so you won't be able to buy some OP items you shouldn't have access to early. It's not a big deal though, since you get much better gear than you used to playing normally anyway.

Gotcha, mainly just wanted to make sure there weren't jobs tied to expansions. IIRC Red Mage didn't exist when I dabbled long ago.

Ah. There are, Red Mage included (I think the other three are Gunbreaker, Samurai, and Dancer). You can't be a Red Mage until you hit level 50, though.

Yeah, the trial comes with one expansion and its three jobs, but unfortunately the other four are locked towards owning the other two expansions (well one expac, buying the most current one gives you the other)

Oh that's a ways away then regardless. Will get my feet wet first then...I think. I've never played this on console before by the file that was already in my PSN library doesn't say Trial or anything. Maybe I already bought some version of this in the past and forgot, lol.

It depends on what Zenos will look coolest with because he is most likely picking up the new melee dps class

I mean there was literally a necromancer in Heroes Gauntlet that was a Warrior of Light, based on the FF5 job.

But even if it isn't literally a necromancer (I think a pet job is unlikely for example), he seems to be pointing to some kind of death-themed scythe job.

Even though I'm not aiming to run Ultimates myself, it is a bummer that the new one got pushed back to 6.1. Think the FFXIV team's mistake was pushing the second one to 5.5 to start when they should've stuck to the Stormblood model of X.1 and X.3 patch Ultimates.

Should I be doing anything at this time besides standard progression? At 20 and just did the quests chain where you go to every starting area.

Generally you want to do most of the side quests with + signs, with some exceptions. Like, probably skip the ones that unlock other classes (So you want to be a -).

Oh yeah I've def been doing those, except for the subjob ones. I know I have to hit 30 in Thuma before unlocking Black Mage and subsequent White Mage, and I don't think I have a reason to do any of the other class starting quests or all these dozens of level 1-3 quests in the new area.

I mean more if I should be doing those green circle quests where you activate it yourself (forgot the name, Leves?) or if I should be queuing for stuff.

Leves are somewhat useful for leveling crafters/gatherers. Theyre pretty useless for battle classes. I assume they might have been more useful back in 1.0?

Nah. Main quest and your class quests are what you should focus on. All those other quests are extra exp in case you wanna level more classes. You don't have to mess with them now.

The blue quests with + sign unlock features in the game like the Challenge Log, the Gold Saucer, and more that just gives you more stuff to do, but they aren't really gating your main progression. Still good to be kn the lookout for them.

OK, I am honestly glad that I can ignore some of these systems. Was getting a little overwhelmed.

Whenever I make a melee character, I know that my early highschool days I always dreamed of a dragoon/samurai or vice versa in FFXI (a game I never actually ended up getting to play), so curious how viable that is.

I will likely end up just watching tons of videos, lol.

Yeah, this isn't like WoW or many other MMOs where some jobs are just not viable for any given patch. Some might be a bit more powerful than others, but they spend a ton of time balancing things such that any given standard comp can clear even the most brutal content.
