On one hand I get it, he was told not to do this on company time and did it anyway. On the other hand I kind of hope Sherwin-Williams corporate sees this marketing opportunity and hires him back while punishing the dimwit managers, even if they were technically right.
Would rather another company, such as Lowe's, hire Tony Piloseno and make him a mascot for their paint mixing videos.

Someone will. A dude that already has 1.2 million subscribers wants to make paint mixing videos is like a goose that lays golden eggs that just got thrown out by Sherwin Williams because they couldn't make omelettes.

Defending the company firing him is kinda gross lol he wasn't stealing. If anything he was just filming himself working. Also Sherwin Williams' logo is covering the world in red paint that looks like blood so you know they're just evil af lol

There's a decent opportunity for Behr here...
Nah, Behr's got an exclusive deal with Home Depot, who are also a pretty boomer-ish company themselves. This kid would likely get canned by Home Depot for the same reason.

Maybe Dunn-Edwards or Benjamin Moore can take this kid lol

Time theft is a thing and on top of making videos while he was on the clock he was also using company equipment to make videos off the clock.

Time theft lol he was doing his job while on camera. He was still working. The only offense he did was film himself using company equipment while working. It's not like they threw the paint away afterwards.

If you're going to ignore what actually happened and instead make up what you want to have happened and base your argument on that then your posting is pointless.

This is a rather short-sighted move on Sherwin-Williams part. Even if they really didn't want to go with this dude's marketing ideas, firing someone with 1.2 million followers for light time-theft (as if anyone is always 100% productive at work) for making videos set make your company look good is a genuinely dumb PR move.

Like okay maybe it's their fault for not agreeing to his idea, although to be clear what I would call middle management (his management in store) liked it and it was corporate that shot him down

How is that time theft if he's off the clock and he paid for the paint? Lol this is less of an offense than getting fired for printing something from the company printer. Defending it is fucking stupid.

That part isn't time theft, it's a separate but related issue in the list of things that lead to his firing. Using company equipment while off the clock for his own benefit. I'm not the person saying that he was only doing one thing, you are, I acknowledge that he was fired for doing multiple things that he shouldn't have been doing.

I'm seeing the exact people you would expect to be defending the company because "time theft" doing just that. I bet a lot of y'all are those absolutely vile types of micromanagers who chortle "if you got time to lean, you got time to clean" or you "steal" plenty of your employer's time by goofing off on the Internet.

It sounds like the guy never got an explicit order to not do this (this being recording himself while mixing customer paint and paint he bought himself), so that's a dead end argument for you to pursue. Just admit that you desperately want to be the one stepping on minimum wage workers so you can feel better about yourself.

Real talk though. As someone who as paid a lot of money to various online influencers, only one of which has the a follower account bigger than this dude, Sherwin-Williams was getting a steal considering all it cost was a little time and equipment use.

I dunno man I don't buy into any of the discourse so far here

I don't feel bad for either party, sherwin williams wasn't buying what he was selling and he obviously didn't want to be a part time paint salesman forever

Seems pretty much like everyone got what they wanted to me. I'm not mad about any part of it

Defending this because they were technically right to fire him is missing the point entirely of why this is stupid and makes everyone doing it look like a weirdo who thinks rules need to be absolute

Is it cost effective advertising? Pretty sure that sherwin williams profits are driven by industrial and commercial users rather than retail, and that tiktok probably isn't the target demo in that retail segment?

In either case the dude is literally trying to start a competing paint brand so I'm just saying there is no reason for anyone to be upset, he seems like he'll be fine

It's cost-effective in that the cost is functionally zero, even if he isn't exactly reaching their target market. Typically an influencer with that follower count is probably costing you something like $200k a year if you are actually contracting with them. So again, it's a pretty good deal for them both.

Sherwin-Williams will be just fine without him though and he is obviously rebounding quite well. So it's not a big deal.
