We've had a year almost to reflect it over. What will stand out about that decade?

I just remember hipsters being a thing and activism becoming more popular.

For entertainment, we had Game of Thrones, most of the MCU and its finale with Endgame, the revival of Star Wars movies, OitNB and the rise and fall of Netflix original programming, Katy Perry released Teenage Dream.

Obama had most of his presidency in the 2010s but we'll probably remember the decade in US politics mostly for Trump's cavalcade of madness. The mueller report, the revolving door of cabinet members, the impeachment, Q anon, etc. The UK had Brexit, also.

COVID technically got its start in the 2010s, and I think, depending on how it plays out, we could end up seeing a lot of nostalgia for the 2010's in the same way people had a lot of nostalgia for the 90's post 9/11.

Internet culture becoming mainstream culture. It was a trend in the late 2000s already but the 2010s really saw the internet stop being its own world and fully be a part of normal life. Social media, every story spreading instantly, everyone recording everything on their phone to post online, etc. 2010s are where it really took hold on a new level.

Or maybe we'll remember it as the time before covid ruined our our lives. Either one works.

Yeah this is probably more accurate than what I said.

Politics aside, I think it's sometimes easy for those of us who were always online to forget how atypical that was a decade ago

a lot of interesting shit happened.

there was a pop culture explosion around 2012. and tech companies went from up-and-coming trends to absolutely dominant players on the world stage. social media went from a fringe part of society to all-encompassing. lots of advances on the world stage occurred. it was a huge decade for human rights progress. I don't know how you could say any particular recently decade was slow but the 2010's certainly weren't.

This is the big one, I think. Internet fully encompassing normal life. Internet ceased being the wild west and became fully civilized.

Honestly it was a pretty sweet decade before Trump took office. Politics were stable. We took massive progressive steps towards marriage, gay and trans equality. Mainstream music was becoming good once again. Video games were solid. Etc.

I'll just focus on music

Mainstream EDM genres emerged like brostep, future bass, trap, bass house, future house, complextro, moombahton, tropical house, etc..

Dubstep as a whole had it's mainstream spotlight with brostep in early 10s, but has remained more of an undercurrent. Chillstep, melodic dubstep, riddim, tearout, deathstep are some of the big subgenres that have grown.

Bass oriented EDM like trap splintered into hybrid trap, heaven trap, dark trap, etc.. Wave music also emerged. Juche is a good example. Midtempo bass which is a sort of industrial/cyber bass oriented genre came to be. Listen to Rezz for midtempo bass. Freeform/space bass like Liquid Stranger is very underground but has really grown. Halftime is like bass heavy quirky drum n bass in literal halftime that also emerged.

Future bass like I said became mainstream with artist such as Marshmello and Flume. A subgenre called kawaii bass in the mid 10s splintered off and is growing. Snail's House and Hyper Potions are good example.

Vapor music in a broad sense which includes vaporwave, future funk, mallsoft, dreampunk, broken transmission, vaportrap, hardvapour, utopian virtual, etc.. all emerged in 2010s underground. Macintosh Plus, Blank Banshee, Saint Pepsi are some examples.

Mainstream/alternative rock was defined hugely by stomp rock like Imagine Dragons. Indie pop/rock as well like Foster The People or Walk The Moon. Think of music inspired by MGMT.

Trap rap literally took over the hip-hop world. What is sometimes called mumble rap is a big part of it. Drill, UK drill, cloud rap, meme rap, emo rap have also became mainstream. Trap metal emerged in later half of 10s.

Kawaii metal like Babymetal became mainstream and even had hit songs on US charts. Alt-Idol is a broader category of Japanese artists using J-pop and blending it new ways like kawaii metal.

Alt pop/synthpop like Grimes, Chvrches, Lorde, Billie Eilish became mainstream. It's less of specific genre. Moreso of an overall style for indie inspired pop with modern production.

Synthwave which started in 00s became partly mainstream 10s. See Stranger Things and Drive soundtrack or The Midnight band. It has also splintered into smaller subgenres

K-Pop literally became a global phenomenon. Psy and BTS became well known artists everywhere.

Mainstream western pop had an electropop phase which started in late 00s but continued in first half of 10s. Think Max Martin produced Katy Perry in early 10s. That dembow dancehall/reggaeton beat was prevalent in pop like Ed Sheeran, Major Lazer, Justin Bieber. Chainsmokers made a future bass pop fusion.

Epic/trailer music was used massively in movie trailers. I'm sure you've heard Two Steps From Hell music and didn't even realize. Think of Hans Zimmer PotC soundtrack on steroids. Now you can hear this epic music used in many military /battle royale shooters

Mainstream country music had its bro-country phase. Think of Luke Bryan. Basically light twangy pop/r&b beats fused with country pop of the 00s.

In general music education became so easy to access with youtubers like Adam Neely, Rick Beato, etc... Also, you can literally find tutorials on how to make so many genres.

I merely scratched the surface

Battle royale genre will be iconic for gaming in the 10s. Fortnite and PUBG weren't necessarily first ones, but first to become mainstream. There's been countless clones and fresh takes on the genre. The Fortnite World Cup was a huge special event.

VR will probably be more defining in the 20s and beyond, but it was the 10s where it all started. This will be more defining for gamers in general as its still niche.

Twitch/streamers became celebrities in the 10s. People like Ninja go on The Tonight Show.

The Switch I think will hold a lot of nostalgia for the 10s years to come.

Minecraft was made in 00s but didn't became a worldwide sensation till the 10s. It will be Zoomers core nostalgia for the 10s like Millenials hold Mario/Sonic for the 80s/90s.

Pokemon Go for real. This was more of a summer of 2016 mini zeitgeist moment. It was something you just had to be there for. Literal parks became full of people of all ages overnight catching Pokemon.

That's what they said about the 90s. Give it time

Well we are in an economic depression, the media including Trump likes to pretend everything is fine it isn't. Some of the numbers the numbers are just insane, $3.1 trillion dollar budget deficit, interest rates at 0%, inflation running amok. The cost of living just to even rent an apartment going to cause you to go brake. With interest rates at 0% there is no savings in America.

Job opportunities shipped overseas because of all the labor laws that governments has passed that stifles capital formation. For some people it was an interesting time, but for a lot of people no. America in the 2010s has turned to one gigantic bureaucracy. Everything you do requires so much paperwork. The 2020s probably is going to get a lot worse.

On a personal level life expectancy in the US has declined. We are not living longer, we are living shorter.

I feel like it's going to be looked back upon the same way that the 1920's are.

A decade that started with an amazing amount of hope, and ended in the greatest crisis in US History.

Social media defines the 2010s

we were on gfaqs in the 2000s and late 90s but most people were just starting to use the internet to interact with a community in 2012 when smart phones came with facebook and twitter

and it quickly got out of control leading to where we are now......people create political echo chambers that pertain to how they view the entire world to the point where it influences politicians.
