I read the rules. I did the practice problems. I even watched tutorial videos with a qt Chinese woman explaining basic strategies while awkwardly spilling pieces all over the floor. I just fail. I am a failure at this, and at life, and at all things.

That's how I feel about Chess. I literally am not good enough, and it is the one game I really want to be good at. Not even like awesome or whatever, but like, hey, I'm not terrible at this.

You should give XiangQi a try. It's similar to chess but imo is more fun. But like all chess games, it's hard to find noobs (same level as you) especially XiangQi is so popular among Chinese and Vietnamese that every kid knows how to play and will probably kick our asses at it.

Same. I really enjoy playing but I've yet to win a single game against my wife or our friend who taught me. Try the mobile app from chess.com. It's free and lets you play against people, read strategies, and run practice drills. It's helped me a lot and I'm really close to beating my friend now.

That is what I do, lol. I just suck. I am starting to see games where I had Mate in 2 at times but I completely missed it, so I guess it's time to start reading up on some Endgame stuff.

Then again, there are also times where I honestly thought the game was close until the very end, just to find out through analysis that I was considered to be losing by a good/significant amount. I think part of the hard thing is it can be hard to get better when you are facing people who are around you or worse than you at my level. In games at my level, I literally blunder a queen but know that there is a decent chance the other guy will blunder right back. I feel if I faced people who weren't like extremely better, but a good few hundred points above me, it would force me to look into better plays. My level just has too many blunders on both sides and only will show me "ah, so this is how this can end up screwing me over eventually."

Do you have a rank? It's really hard to get started in go, but when I was learning, I found it much easier to play a different kind of game, opening with 3-4 5-3 and 5-4 much more often than 4-4 or 3-3

Also, go against computers is much less satisfying than playing with another person, especially with real stones. Also, I don't know if he still makes videos, but look up nick sibicky on YouTube for good tips and chill videos.

Chess is easy...you just look at all available moves and then see what moves they leave your opponent can make, and then see where they most logically might go and then try to plan around that.

Wait, so you know the game's real name is "Go" instead of "Chinese Checkers", yet you sought out a Chinese mentor anyway? And the konstant piece-spilling didn't tip you off?? Alis why?

It was a joke. Go is a German game, but when it was introduced to the west, they relabled it Chinese Checkers to add market value by making it sound mysteriously oriental or some shit.

I know it sounds like I'm taking the piss, but using the japanese terminology is very helpful in learning go because it will get you more hits on searching. joseki is roughly "sharing" and is a set of viable options in each corner of the board based on opening piece and the approach the opponent makes. Understanding some of these concepts will get you roughly equal footing in the corner, but leveraging it successfully gives you better total board state.
