If it caused him so much, why not amputate it?

Doctors are weary of unnecessary amputation

My mom has a foot that's had 10 surgeries and turned into a useless, painful club fused at the hallux and ankle and they refuse to even consider amputation

I believe it was his ego, and the ongoing belief that he would eventually find a way to fix it. A main part of the entire show is his persistent need to solve everything, and amputation would be a defeat to himself and he'd rather bear the pain than come to terms with that.

Nice reasoning.

pretty sure he explains why in season 1. "because plot" is most appropriate, though.

People who have their limbs don't generally want to stop having their limbs.

It's also strongly hinted through the series that a lot of his pain is psychological.

The actual answer:

He didnt want to lose his leg and be a cripple. There was an experimental but extremely risky life threatening surgery to save his leg completely that he wanted to do, but while he was in a coma his wife opted for a middle ground surgery against his will that was less risky and saved his leg BUT left him with a limp and pain, which made him bitter and hardened, made her leave and made him and the House we know today.

Also he was just heavily addicted to painkillers and it gave him a good excuse.

I want to say that there's even a point in the series where he kicks the habit and it turns out his leg isn't hurting nearly as badly as he always thought it did.

Cuddy: "Kids today are running marathons."

House: :Yeah, they just don't look as pretty."

Med Student: "The patient's an idiot." (unknowingly referring to House)

House: "They usually are."

It was his ego.

Yeah there was an entire (Emmy winning?) episode about this. Come on TC.

i dunno if it won anything, but it's almost certainly the best episode of the series.

Then it got really absurd around season 5 or so? And way less good

I saw the whole series, and I think the only significant dip in quality happens in season 8 when most of the regular cast is sidelined for new characters. Earlier seasons had quicker wit and more interesting medical cases, but writers eventually run out of steam for the hard-hitting stuff and settle on safer, more reliable gags and quips.

At what point does it become super formulaic? I feel like that happened even in the early seasons where every single episode follows the same beats.

yeah, the "monster" of the week eps all have a similar feel to them. if that's a bother, this might not be the right show for you =). but the eps where they change it up are fantastic.

That's the thing though, I don't remember a lot of episodes where they changed it up.

there weren't. besides the run at the beginning of season 4, i'd guess it was only a few times a season

Not sure if the same thing, I was thinking about season 6 when that patient died of an embolism after he committed to amputating her leg.
