Thinking about getting a French Press

Pros
  • Manual control
  • fast and easy
  • clean up is a cinch
Cons
  • Supposedly raises cholesterol
  • only makes four-five cups at a time depending on size

I have a special coffee maker that grinds whole beans into grounds right into the filter. Nothing else comes close.

If I'm feeling particularly low effort and I have a few people to make coffee for, I'll use a french press and just let it sit there in the beans for like 10 minutes.

My standard is an aeropress, which is a bit of a faff but is also the cleanest, strongest cup of coffee I know how to make.

In either case, fresh roast beans and grinding on the spot makes the biggest difference.

french press is convenient for large brews (can hold up to 1L) and is my go-to for brewing dark roasts. however, the cleanup is a hassle because i gotta scrape the grinds out into the trashcan, just throwing out a paper filter is much easier.

i prefer pour over with v60.

holy cow that is expensive. and it still brews auto-drip. for $200 you can get a good burr grinder and brew using a better method like french press, moka pot, aeropress, pour over, etc

If you have a sieve you can just add some water into the container and swirl it around with the grounds, then just pour the slurry straight through the sieve. Works like a charm

I have and use a French Press every day and I love it.

Strongly recommend whole bean coffee that you grind yourself first, use a coarse grind. Also recommend a medium roast for this method.

I don't drink coffee but my girlfriend does and I bought her an Aeropress last year for Christmas (and I usually end up making it for her).

Works great for a single cup and is super easy to clean up but is annoying to make for more than one person. We use a stainless steel filter in ours.

My french press is my daily brewer. Works well with high quality and cheap budget coffee. Gets the job done and is more mobile vs a drip machine so I can bring it to my desk and don't have to get up to get another cup. Worst to clean.

I have a Chemex which is my fancy weekend coffee device that makes great coffee but takes more effort and time to brew. Plus it's expensive. Medium effort to clean.

I also have an Aeropress which is by far the fastest to make a cup but doesn't make a lot. Final quality is surprisingly good as well. Good for making coffee on the go. Easiest to clean.

Cold brew is awesome as well but need to plan in advance.

but then don't you need to clean the sieve? <_< i try to avoid putting grinds down my sink whenever possible

i will echo what pinky said that the easiest way to get better coffee is to buy freshly roasted, whole bean coffee and to grind it yourself.

as for FP, most directions will say to grind coarse. this is to avoid fines falling through the filter and getting into the cup. there's a way around this which allows you to grind finer and make a much better tasting cup:

Heh, this is also the method I use.

I will say it's excellent but it seems like I have to use way more beans in a french press than I would for an aeropress in order to get the same level of strength. And even then the french press is always more silty.

when i brewed in aero i'd go with 30g coffee : 500g water, same as i do for FP and v60. when i did aero this way i'd basically brew a concentrate and water it down to 500g (basically cafe americano)

there will be a bit of mud at the bottom of the cup, even with Hoffman's method, yes. but it allows a finer grind, which IMO make for more flavorful coffee. once i feel the grit at the bottom i know i'm done and i just pour out the last little bit.

In my experience it comes out of the sieve pretty readily at the end, though yeah there's usually a trace amount left over. I just rinse it at that point but I don't think it would be much of a hassle to clean either
