Rathalos is the face of the series, but he'd be a boring statue. There are more fun looking monsters. Nargacuga, Tigrex, the Magalas, Kirin, etc.

I'm sorry, but 10,000 of ANYTHING on a PS2 would absolutely destroy your framerate. It'd be like playing chess through the mail. ~johnboy1

Honestly, how do you guys play these games? Because I do it wrong, obviously. It's like three hours of intro walkthroughs via a talking cat giving you a bunch of stat info you have no use for as a beginner. Then you go grind some low level herbivore dinosaurs with no real help in terms of progress.

the games have historically been pretty terrible at roping in new players, that I have to admit. For most people it's about rushing through the first few hunts until you fight something that is actually big and scary where the fun really kicks in.

I've only played World and can say that it is NOT like you describe. You start fighting actual monsters pretty quickly. Maybe that will be more your speed?

It's a lot easier if you have a buddy to play with. I'm playing some Generations Ultimate (not my first MH) and I always forget the beginning is a bunch of bs lol. But in my first MH, my brother let me know what to do to get past the beginning and some decent starting upgrade paths for weapons/armor.

World isn't much better, honestly. The first five hunts are against relatively small creatures, with the sixth being a barroth. You don't get to anjanath until 3 quests after that which is sort of where the real game begins. Other than the little tutorial area where you can mess around with weapons, the game doesn't really try to explain combat all that much either.

For new players, anjanath is going to be a hard cliff to climb unless they grind out a full set of gear.

I actually found it much easier going backwards in the series. Which all the vets said was an awful idea.

I had put 90 hours into gen on 3DS before I played world but hadnt gotten all that far.

After putting 1k hours in world I picked up gen ultimate on switch and relatively breezed through.

Ive tried before and its just not my type of game. If there was more of an RPG element to it, then it might be more fun for me.

Generations is very different from the old games and they mean you going back to Freedom Unite or Portable 3rd, not the Generations games. Anything prior to Tri and it gets quite dicey. Go back and try Monster Hunter Portable 2 and say the same thing here, because Geneations is a different kind of Monster Hunter than World or the Portable games.

I could see that, but when I asked I made it clear I was talking about 3ds.

I might have even done it on the gen board as that was the most current game at the time.

  • lol, not awful anymore?

You can also go back as far as 3 Ultimate on the 3DS, which is still a bit archaic but not nearly as bad as the Portable ones. Portable 2 is when the games finally started including information on skills and stuff into the actual game itself and not left to the internet to fill in the pieces, but many consider Freedom Unite to be the best of the bunch (I personally love it the most out of all the games).

I realized I was being flippant and a troll and I didn't want to do that, so I edited. I personally hate the Generations games with the weapon arts and the new upgrade system. Feels more like a weird action game than a Monster Hunter to me.
