Both take multiple ingredients to make and both are high in sodium.

Tortilla's usually have some form of oil used in cooking which ups the calorie count. Salsa is pureed and diced vegetables and spices.

Bread is made of mostly flour, which is empty calories with hardly any nutrition. Then you have water, sugar, salt, yeast and a leavening agent like baking soda. Sometimes they also add eggs, butter, oils or lards, which up the calorie count.

Salsa is mostly water and tomatoes, some spices and preservatives.

Salt has nothing to do with calories btw.

Carbs just sit in your stomach and are hard to burn off.

They aren't as dense as fats. Fats have 9 calories per gram, proteins and carbs have 4 calories per gram. What makes carbs (sugar/flour/starch based) easy to overeat is that the ones without fiber don't provide nearly as much satiety as protein or fat. Fiber is not counted towards caloric content and is what helps the breakdown process less quick. Excluding the fibers, carbs stimulate insulin the highest and are quick to break down, while fats (with the rare exception of certain MCTs) stimulate insulin the least, are the most satiating and the slowest to break down.

If you take a high fiber bowl of oatmeal and a sugary bowl of cereal with the same size, they may both have roughly the same calories, but the oatmeal will make you fuller for longer because the fiber in it slows down the digestive process, and it has less sugar (which speeds it up), because sugar is high glycemic and lacks nutrition.

Same applies to fruit vs fruit juice. Raw fruit has all the nutrients and natural fibers that slow down the digestive process. Juice has no fiber and is typically pasteurized, which heats and kills any beneficial enzymes and nutrients. Eating raw fruit will keep you fuller for much longer than drinking juice, and this is why fresh cold-pressed juice is the best juice you can get, not the Sunny D or Tropicana junk.
