There's a lot of average designs, but the good ones are probably among the best in the series. It's got the best Champion, makes most Pokmon at least useable with the physical/special split and addition of lots of new moves, it made competitive actually viable with lots of new strategies and options as a result, plus adding tons of items, and has a great soundtrack. It also just had a really nice and distinct vibe compared to the newer ones, which can feel a bit more hollow in places. The plot obviously isn't great as per usual for a Pokemon game, it's a little slow, and there's issues with the TM/HM system still, but the amount of content in the game is ridiculous considering its time. Plus it introduced online. I think HG/SS being even better in comparison push it up the ranks even more, with two of the four/five games which are considered the best being released within a year of each other, and also being two of the most content-heavy. --- Perhaps the golden rock was inside us all along. <cite>Sheep007 posted [p:947888271] in Why is Pok... I think I just didn't like the soundfont they used. Like, it was in this weird middle ground where it didn't sound like timeless game MIDI, but wasn't quality enough to resemble real instruments. I know Masuda went with jazz as the running theme for the soundtrack, but I dunno.
