And yet these are the two games with the gender choice option, and the cover art for both games features the male character.

And Eivor is 100% a female name, still much in use in that part of the world.

Hmmmmm.

They're trying to please the Twitter crowd and actual gamers.

Didn't know Eivor was supposed to be a female. I was going to do the female in Odyssey, guess I'm doing the female in Valhalla too.

If reports are to be believed, they wanted Aya to be the lone playable character in Origins, but marketing wouldn't allow it.

Nah, both games have Serge Hascot's fingerprints all over them.

Which I've thought makes it weird that Quebec got so far into Odyssey before being told they couldn't just go with Kassandra.

Mass Effect had Mshep with all the cover/promotional art largely as well. Statistics show people played him much more then Fshep, and I imagine the same is true of Assassin's Creed so they target the widest/simplest market with advertising.

There's data available online showing that in these types of games, the vast majority of players choose the male.

I thought Kassandra was legit the better option in Odyssey, Alexios as the main character feels so dry and sarcastic, it doesn't fit a lot of the story.

I'm not sure that really makes any sense with how that story was written tbqh

Also I haven't played Valhalla yet but if I'm understanding the end twist correctly then that was a pretty neat justification for the male/female choice

But Aya wasn't playable at all in Origins iirc

Couple missions, like dying the lighthouse brazier green and killing Septimius in Rome you play as Aya.

They completely changed it before the game got very far in development, iirc. It's the reason Aya is even a playable character at all.

She was, most notably in the final sequence/prologue, when she assassinates Julius Caesar.

It could be done without the choice. My main annoyance with it is because they have to fit in this gender choice, it makes the game story weaker because they can't incorporate the character's gender into how the world at large views them.

Like, female Eivor would have likely been married off to secure an alliance, like how Randvi was married off to Sigurd.

That's the problem with having options for both while wanting to design a truly unique character. It just comes off as weird. They should have just gone with the woman completely.
