this mf didn't make a movie for six years and then gives us some inconsequential ahistorical nonsense that looks like crap

so many other 1930s hollywood stories to pick from that are more in fincher's sleazy pervy wheelhouse

anyway i guess its fine, i wasn't bored, just a pretty whatever movie. should have lopped off the stuff about citizen kane and just focused on how hollywood influenced politics.

Funding had nothing to do with it. Fincher doesn't like working on TV shows because filming schedules for TV are ass.

mindhunter's not that good imo

also mank is a pretty ugly movie which is a surprise considering fincher is probably the best digital filmmaker out there. the social network looks fantastic, gone girl too.

but mank is hideous. maybe b&w digital shouldn't be a thing. not sure. but the outdoor night scenes looked like day and the outdoor day scenes looked like 100% cgi. just a weird look. also they added digital film grain (sure, whatever) and cigarette burns (????). also had to turn subtitles on cuz i couldn't understand a god damn thing anyone was saying. which is weird.

yeah if they just did b&w and wide screen it'd be fine

but digital film grain is a weird choice. i only noticed it in a few shots. possibly an issue with compression from netflix or my internet though (this is why streaming sucks btw).

but the cigarette burns make no sense. like why. the vast majority of ppl watching it are going to be doing so at home on their tv or laptop. and you shot it digitally. and it isnt like that stuff pops up on physical media for old movies, all that shit gets erased in restorations.

bizarre choices.

citizen kane is a great movie. unfortunately it comes with a lot of baggage which i think turns people off or gives them weird expectations. you should watch it instead of mank.

and also mank has pretty much nothing to do with citizen kane until like... the last 10 minutes.
