My sister is 28 and still lives at home. She pays no rent, does virtually no chores, and pays no bills, including contributing nothing towards groceries. She has a full time job at a grocery and only has that because I convinced her to apply as it was better than her part time job working at a JoAnn fabric for less than $10 an hour. She didn't learn to drive until she was 25 because she was too lazy, having my parents drive her to and from everywhere, be it work, conventions, social events, what have you. She has an associate's in art from the local community college and has never expressed any interest in furthering her education nor taking up any trades. Her friends are almost all in similar living situations.

So what does this have to do with cats? My sister previously got a cat after her last cat died of cancer. This was about 10 years ago. The new cat had problems, namely it shat everywhere due to IBS. Rather than take the cat to the vet, or at the very least clean up after the cat, she just let it shit everywhere. Eventually even my parents got tired of the cat shitting everywhere and paid to take it to the vet, and forced my sister to keep a cat box in her room where the cat liked to stay. The corner where the cat box was setup became covered in cat shit, on the walls, in the carpet, everywhere. My sister would spend all day in this room, and the stink was so bad it would fill the upstairs with the smell of cat feces. The smell also stuck to her hair and clothes. My sister never cleaned the cat boxes properly, it was common for them to be so filthy that the cat piss would accumulate on top of the used litter. An entire room of the house is quarantined off as it is completely coated in cat piss and used litter that my sister refused to pick up.

My sister's cat died of some sort of wasting illness probably due to the untreated IBS. Because she was sad, they allowed her to adopt 2 new cats. Keep in mind my sister has not cleaned up after the one that was shitting everywhere, did not take care of the cat, and her negligence probably contributed to its relatively early demise. Now she has 2 cats to be responsible for. Nothing in her life gives any indication that she's responsible, neither for herself nor any animal in her trust, but especially not with cats. My parents, fully aware of this, allowed this to transpire. Then again, they're allowing her to live there rent free so it's kind of a chicken and egg thing.

I'm upset at my parents for enabling this kind of irresponsible behavior, I'm upset at my sister for being this irresponsible in the first place, and I'm upset because those cats are going to live in their own filth just like the last one did. However, neither my parents nor my sister see anything wrong with this situation, obviously, and cannot understand why I am upset.

I'm not sure if/when I will be at that house again but if you can picture sticky brown-drenched drywall peeling away around a rubbermaid catbox that's sitting on newspaper that has become bonded to the green carpet beneath it at a molecular level because it is drenched in years of cat piss, all while mold is beginning to grow on this mess, you have an idea.

My whole family is like that. My dad became disabled around 2005 and ever since then he's been sitting on his ass in front of the TV for 10+ hours a day doing nothing. His disability is narcolepsy btw so it's not like he can't go out and do things when he's feeling well, or at least do things around the house or the yard, he just refuses to move. My mother, who has a degree in chemistry, has been working as a pharmacy tech for over a decade. Prior to that she worked at an Arby's trying to feed the family while my dad applied for disability and she blew her back out unloading boxes. When I was living with those people I was terrified I'd end up them and desperately tried to get out.

They didn't used to be white trash, my dad used to have a career and my mom worked in a bakery which she loved. My sister has always been this way though.
