Yeah, and it was an utter disgrace as well. She finally stands up to her family for the shit they constantly throw at her, but she then rescinds all of it when it's shown that they'll just turn on each other without her; Brian even praised her for taking all of the abuse.

Tbf, you're not suppose to respect any of the family to begin with. At least, not since the very early seasons. A few were respectable in the beginning, but now it's an all out fight to see who can be the worst. If you go in looking for reslectable traits, you watching it wrong. Same reason I think Peggy hate gets out of hand. Like, she's written to be funny, not to be likable. You're not suppose to respect her choices.

Uh, the episode didn't end with her discovering she deserved it. Literally nothing was changed at the end. That's the whole thing. It just added depth to how fucked up it is. If anything it shined light on how much it's not deserved, so it should be more funny if that's the angle you liked about it.

I don't like the idea that you support things you can laugh at. I see it as laughing so you don't cry. You realize these things are wrong but you're not gonna let that form a dark cloud you live under.

Like, all the people laughing at Meg aren't also laughing at documentaries that showcase real abuse. Your mind can easily seperate the 2. One is fictional and no one is actually hurt, the other is a harsh reality that some people go through. It's obvious why one is funny and one isn't

I've seen you get pretty offended at other fiction that sexualizes minors and makes fun of the mentally disabled though.

That's not what this was about. This wasn't about specific jokes, it was about the overall treatment of Meg. I don't even like the jokes revolving around Meg that much, they're usually low hanging fruit.

And you might be mentioning when I brought up how I don't like that they made Joe a one note character where everything revolves around him being disabled while they took away a his redeeming qualities, dunno if this is what classifies as "offended". Unlike Meg, who in the mentioned episode, got a light shined on her redeeming qualities. Because she's more fleshed out.

Joe basically is another Meg now, except all the jokes are cheap jokes revolving around his disability. I'm still not judging anyone else for laughing at them. It just seems in poor taste, when he use to be a respectable character with depth. Meg became a more respectable character with depth. Even though she still has her major flaws.

Edit: Oh, and Id never defend sexualizing minors, so I don't know why that was even brought up.

Double Edit: Just noticed you said "Mental" disabilities. I'd need my mind refreshed, cause I dunno where that one is from. I'll admit to it if you got a verbal receipt that jogs my memory.

Well if you're saying it's in poor taste that's kind of judging them. And if you're defending laughing at fictional abuse because no one gets hurt and that people can separate reality from fiction, the same logic also applies to sexualization of minors, which for the record is something Family Guy does by the boat loads as well such as making child molestation jokes with Peter and Chris and also sexualizing Meg (a minor) and Stewie.

Bruh. How can I make it more clear that I don't like all of Family Guy's jokes. I literally just made a post about some of their humor being in poor taste. Which you initially mentioned and then stopped using the information when it became inconvenient to your argument. I feel like you keep making assumptions up about me, so you can easily argue against your own assumptions. And laughing at comedy involving adults is not the same as sexualizing minors, that is an insane reach. Just like I don't laughat all the Quagmire jokes where he's sexualuzing minors or talking about getting them when they turn 18 on some Chris D'lia shit. Honestly, the best Family Guy jokes imo are the ones that don't rely on shock humor. That's what I stick around for.

Only people with no depth in thought think in "You either like it all or you likenone of it"

They definitely don't. Which is why you'll walk away liking some and not liking the rest. Because they don't care enough to make something consistent.

You just think domestic abuse is much less serious than sexualizing minors.

When you're right, you're right. I don't just have a pile that says bad and a pile that sats good. And Domestic Abuse would be a few notches below Sexualizing Minors for how bad I think it is to poke fun at. And on that scale, I only dip to a certain point of deprivity. I'd also like to throw in that it's not just about what the joke is about, but how it's framed. And Family Guy will do jokes where the deprivity is the only thing to it, there's nothing clever behind it. There's no social commentary behind it. I'd say with Megs episode, there actually was social commentary behind it. Being that we treat others like shit so we don't have to deal with our own problems. And those who take it and try their best to not feed into or deflect it are kind of unsung heros. Hence the depth of character Meg got from the episode.

I know I said Family Guy usually isn't trying. But this particular episode did actually try some things. It was actually in a group of episodes that got really dark for some reason. Coincidentally it was right next to the one where Quagmires sister is being abused by her bf the whole episode. Talk about domestic violence being portrayed straight forward and unfunny as possible >_>. That episode is hard to watch. Seems like both the episodes were way more about being dark than being funny.

That's actually perfectly fair. Most people see domestic abuse as less serious than sexualizing minors as do I. I just don't think your claim that you believe fiction is ok to laugh at because people can separate it from reality is something you yourself believe in 100%. It does help soften things. Since even people who are sensitive to something like an offensive holocaust or rape joke would likely take it less serious if the subject of the joke was a fictional character compared to a real person. But there is still a line drawn dependent on person to person where even fictional things is bad to laugh at: for example to you and I'm sure plenty of others, sexualizing minors. While people who are sensitive to domestic abuse or racist jokes will have the line drawn there.
I'm sure there actually are extremely impartial people who are willing to overlook anything that's fictional but those people are really rare and most people who claim they are will still be offended at things that personally affect them.

For more contrast, there are also jokes where Family Guy pokes at celebrities with really fucked up lives. Like Whitney Houston. Those always rub me the wrong way too. I don't get how pointing out her drug addiction and the fact she was physically abused is suppose to be funny. It's just depressing. Context really plays into it for me.

Also, you're right about the 100% thing. But I'm not 100% on anything I do. That closes people off to acknowledging their own faults. Tbh, I been enjoying this conversation because I do feel like you are close to making me realize something hypocritical. I doubt I'd change much atm tho. Humor is the glue that holds everything else in my mind together. I can give up some stuff, but I need to keep enough stuff to stop me from dwelling on everything bad in the world. Like I said in another topic, I don't want people to get so soft that I can't even joke about my own scoliosis cause no one is sure they can laugh with someone who has that sense of humor. Cause now you're fuckin up my prefered therapeutic methods and leaving me for dead >_>

People saying Meg doesnt deserve the shit thrown at her havent watched the show enough.

In the first three seasons she was by far the worst character. Constantly rude to her parents, abused Chris all the time, flipped her lid constantly because she wasnt popular, was a thief, the list goes on.

That was the joke, she was supposed to be a ha ha imagine if your teenage daughter ended up like this piece of shit.

In typical family guy fashion they ran the joke into the ground, but Im sorry to tell you this, but she deserves the shit she gets. Straight up bad person from episode 1 while the rest of the cast gradually got worse.

I mean, the second episode of the show is about her dad not wanting to teach her to drive, then ruining the town's tv and blaming it on her. I haven't watched those episodes in years but what specific instances are you talking about
