Like I hate to be like "it's liberal's fault nazi's exist" but seriously though from like 2011-2017 SJW's were soooo annoying. I don't think they are as much of a thing anymore but as someone who was apart of the Occupy Movement I can honestly say SJW's ruined Occupy Wall-Street and made political science classes on a liberal arts college campus really shitty.

Am I just biased? I kinda feel like people were partly attracted to the alt right because they were the only ones standing up to the SJW nonense.

Things are wayyyyy different now, we are a year into a new decade even but does anyone have any thoughts on this?

No, people are responsible for the views they hold and espouse. They fell down the rabbit hole because of the sites they frequented, the media they consumed, because of their demographics, and because they were targeted by a wide ranging movement that actively tries to suck people in.

Many others were exposed to "SJWs" and yet only a small percentage of those became alt right. That only happens when you already had trash values and thinking processes.

No because the annoying SJWs of 2011-2017 was like one person being annoying and all the alt-right types just did a good job at marketing that one person as representative of "all those politics you don't like". You can still see this today, where one person complaining about something on Twitter is apparently proof that the left is somehow destroying America.

The left can't counter that because "the Left" is a cluster**** of regular people with different opinions, while conservatives are an increasing minority in the country so need to stay as unified as possible.

Nope as the Alt-roght are just SJWs times ten. If anything they make SJWs more appealing. At least SJWs have their hearts in the right place. Even if they are misguided and annoying. They are rarely dangerous.

Those two statements were not in any way contradictory. People used that "extreme group" as a scapegoat and a shield for their beliefs. We all saw SJWs, and yet only a small group went in that direction. That's because they had flaws that were successfully exploited. They had unresolved anger, lack of belonging, frustration, etc.

maybe I'm just misunderstanding the topic myself but I thought this was about whether we thought it might push some people in that direction, not whether everyone ends up altright because of it

if a person has some views that align with each side (not as crazy as you might think) and one side does something they believe to be extreme, unnecessary, stupid, whatever you want to call it, they'll probably gravitate toward the other side

No. I think it's a few things:

  • Its social media and the internet making radicalized opinions more acceptable,
  • The degradation of common facts caused by the ease at which misinformation can spread,
  • The lack of political leadership to stand up for the common good, and
  • People living in their own echo chambers.

Someone not liking that a person prefers a particular pronoun doesn't make them believe that Joe Biden is a socialist or that cell phone towers are spreading a virus. It's stupidity being allowed to take over.

Yea. People are dumb and reactionary regardless of where the fall on the political spectrum. Pushing dumb mass over corrections like worrying about the ability of choice of a fictional nonsentian charater detracts from actual progress by making reatcionarys double down. Then they react to the reactionaries creating a negative feedback loop that bad actors can super easily take advantage of.

Well... I agree that trying to hold them accountable is sort of silly since I don't think it's a very significant cause but I also think it's probably non-zero. Although that doesn't mean they shouldn't do what they do because it makes people alt-right because that's not quite right either

Not blaming sjw either its a weird symbiotic relationship rewarded by how social media functions. If we didnt have a weird pseudo social credit system in place it wouldnt work. Think back to the premyspace and facebook years, dumb fringe bullshit was met with people just rolling their eyes. Now not so much.

Alt-righters are pretty horrible heartless people.

They cry SJWs are anti-freedom but, alt-righters truly hate any sort of free expression. They want everyone to be mindless and happy. Don't question anything, consume, CONSUME. If you try to do anything outwards they harass and threaten you till you leave. Worst part is they're everywhere online. Go look at the CB2077 and the toxic community around it. People sending death threats, rape threats and then having the nerve to say they're just.

I think you are mistaking SJWs pushing people to the alt right as the Overton window being artificially adjusted by fringe online activists that gained cultural influence through social media and that had this habit of calling everybody they viewed as opposition to the "alt right."

I mean, these ideas aren't new, they were just not taken all that seriously even by the mainstream left until recently.

Also, these personality types are still around online all over, especially twitter.

I take issue with the wording, but I'd say yeah, a little. People feel threatened by "SJWs" due to already being insecure (in their masculinity, race, religion, or any number of other things), and react to being challenged on their previously safe self-identity by throwing the toys out of the pram. I think the videos, quotes and outrage over "SJWs" that are in a ton of mass media have contributed to people gravitating towards the right simply because more people consume right-wing media than left-wing, on average.

I'd also say that people on the left are often naive and don't try to play the game when they get media opportunities. Right-wing people will often raise "concerns" or rephrase a nastier stance on the issue to make it more palatable, whereas someone on the left will just say what they think. Frankly, racism and sexism and what have you are more emotional topics for those who have suffered from them, and it makes it more possible to portray the left and particularly women as irrational or shrill or bossy, painting people on the right as the "rational" or "normal" option. It's a little depressing, because you shouldn't have to dress basic human decency up for people to agree with it, but I think we're at that stage and probably have been for a long, long time.
