You mean the first DWM game on GBC? If so, you'd be better off playing the 3DS remake as it's been fully translated by fans.

I tried the remake and didn't like it quite as much. I prefer how dungeons are handled in the original, and generally prefer 2D-style DQ games to 3D.

Fair enough. I typically prefer 2D RPG's over 3D one's so I can understand that. As for the dungeons, I'm kinda mixed on that. I liked the smaller dungeons better in 3D, but the larger ones really felt like they dragged on in the 3D one.

Hypothetically speaking emulators are pretty cool for changing what platform your game you already own is on. Like if you want to play Double Dragon II on your PSP. I've never done that but it would be pretty cool to do it.
Hypothetically speaking I would have only ever considered it for in the neighborhood of 1-3 games that I didn't already own on another platform. A great Japanese exclusive like Fire Emblem VI, for example. --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! ... Copied to Clipboard!

Yes, emulation is fantastic both for preservation and for bringing older games up to modern display standards. Super Mario Galaxy is 13 years old but played on Dolphin legitimately looks like it could have come out this year. Speaking of this year, Super Mario Sunshine on Dolphin is still a straight up better version of the game than the one included in 3D All-Stars.

Not for a while. Mostly stuff back in the 8 and 16bit era that was extremely difficult to get a hold of or just was not localized like if it was not for emulators I would probably not have played games like Earthbound, Terranigma, Secret of Mana 2, etc.
Also there was a bunch of other "games" that came packaged with some older emulators. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Emulators are such a basic staple of my gaming hobby that the idea of not having used one is very strange to me, like asking a car enthusiast if they've ever driven a vehicle with automatic transmission

Yeah, but I've stopped almost cold turkey in the last five years or so. Most of the old stuff is available for purchase easily enough, and it's usually also so damn cheap that I'd rather just pony up the $5 than deal with the emulation/rom software.

I used to use an SNES emulator in college just so I could get my gaming fix in, but nowadays, I only use them to play stuff I can't otherwise play, namely games with fan translations that never came over here.

I used to emulate a lot, but haven't in the past few years because Steam is just so convenient.
