Really enjoyed my time with this tbh. As somebody who was never really interested in a remake of FF7, I was a bit surprised at how engaged I was in the story and the "expanded" characters (mostly Biggs/Jessie/Wedge. lol @ Leslie). I think they really captured the aesthetic of the original game. Even though the texture quality and geometry was a little questionable, the game made good use of color and effects to still look nice despite many assets looking like shit if you stop and look. The VA was pretty decent for a Japanese game too.

The battle system is pretty great imo. A great compromise between a menu based system and action game. I felt like I was fully engaged in both aspects of the system, especially since they tied ATB meter gain to basic attacks (which also encourages character swapping). Love that the materia and equipment system basically made it over unmolested. I understand the praise.

I also thought there would be way more side quests based on how people complained about them. Surprisingly small part of the game for all the talk about it.

I can definitely see why this would piss somebody off if they really wanted a faithful remake of FF7 though. The game literally goes off the rails right at the end to basically tell players this is NOT a faithful remake lol. This is a choice I personally liked because I might get to see my "Zack survives and saves Aerith" fanfic come to life I'm interested in seeing what will change in a sequel. But my opinion of the game would probably be about the same if you removed all the Whisper stuff.

Anyway, I'm sure you all got this out of your system almost a year ago but I wanted to talk about it.

Sigh... another flopic for the books. I'll probably copy/paste this to the game board later if it doesn't look too degenerate.

I appreciate your unironic pity post. But I know there are a handful of CE people that would talk about the game. I'll bump tomorrow and see if I can catch them.

I forget if you were the same guy, so if you were I already said my thoughts, but...FFVII Remake was something I majorly enjoyed. It wasn't perfect in every way, I think the area and dungen design could've been a bit better, but man...the music, the gameplay, the boss battles, the action and emotional setpieces, the character moments...were all really good. It was an extremely fun trip for most of the game and I actually unironically enjoyed the ending, I just hope they don't veer too far off from the original story going forward because then there wouldn't have been a point to making it a remake. But I like the idea of adding new stuff to throw in as curveballs for every player. It's better than knowing exactly what's gonna happen in the next parts.

I liked it, but feel like this alternate timeline type things could have made more sense in Final Fantasy VIII. You know, with Time Kompression and all. Also Stamp's theme slaps!

I never played the original but I liked it. I agree the battle system was super well done. Although the story completely lost me towards the end. Maybe they expected the player to have played the original, because I had no idea who that talking dog was or basically what the fuck is going on from that point forwards

In the original that talking dog has more significance later on, but since he shows up so late in Remake he's just kinda there.

And yeah, a lot of the stuff shown at the end is something only players of the original can understand. New players will just be like "visions of a potential future? what's this?" and be intrigued at what comes next regardless.

Yeah I don't think I have a controversial opinion. So I don't expect too much discussion lol.

I agree. I'm really hoping we still get every location in the FF7R series in about the same order. It's really awesome to see familiar places come to life, which is the best part of a remake anyway imo.

I think I forgot to mention in my post I think this game captured a good mixture of serious story with light hearted moments I feel a lot of games don't hit these days. Maybe it's just I haven't been playing many Japanese games but idk. The humorous moments were actually funny and endearing without undermining other parts of the story.

True... FF8 would also be more improved with story expansion imo.

Well in the original you meet Red XIII there as well. And in the original it's not meant to be entirely clear what was happening with President Shinra, Hojo, and Sephiroth (imo) and the Whispers only made it more complicated.

Also the music is great, as was mentioned. But the music in the original was strong as well so that's somewhat expected.

Might play FF7 again soon. It's funny to think it might have the same play time as my ff7r run (38 hours).

On the topic of music, it's amazing that a theme for a random ghost boss (or Abzu) gets this fucking amazing piece.

I'm thinking about it and all the bosses were pretty fun in this game. Kept me on my toes without being ball crushing hard. I assume that changes in hard mode, but I think Normal was tuned very well. Cool multiple phase bosses, great animation/design, good gimmicks/unique strategies, and a big boss for just about every chapter. Not much more I could want.

I played regular ff7 for the first time maybe 4 months before the remake came out

I liked the gameplay of the remake waaaaaay more. As long as the story in part 2 isn't Kingdom Hearts nonsense and rather the Advent children theory I'll be super happy.

Yeah the demo doesn't give you enough time to really learn and enjoy it. Plus barrett is probably the most boring in the early game.

Pretty much. I get they wanted an easy-to-digest part of the game (super-guided experience that's easy to grasp) but the combat gets so much fun not much later on.

Thinking about this now, I can also see how the first boss would give a bad impression. It's as long or longer than all the other bosses, but you're never really under great threat and you don't really have any options. So it's kind of just waiting for this big block of health to die. While other bosses also have a lot of health, their phases and attacks are more threatening, and obvious you have more materia and weapon abilities to work with at any given moment.

I like how its a sequel to Advent Children and im excited we might get to see Zack alive somehow in alternate Gaia...Arbiter of Fate was lame and more or less just a Darkside from KH with Legions from Astral Chain (like that it was a refrence from Lazoo and co from AC tho), actual final boss was pretty sick, Barret had the best development in it, like how the bring up DeepGround and the original Avalance from Before Crisis.

Overall happy not worried about the future parts.

amazing game. probably my favorite game ever. absolutely LOVE what they did with the cast, the music, the visuals, the combat...the story. if i want a faithful remake, i'll play the original which i also loved. this to me feels like the original + a lot more because of how they expand the storyline. it's wonderful and i can't wait to see more.

Yuffie was a random encounter on the world map, she was 100% optional like Vincent.

oh i thought you had to encounter her in a field near cosmo canyon, in a specific tile or set of tiles. not anywhere in the open world.
