Nintendo claims it's because they're forming their own program. Whether this is the case or not, I can almost assure you that Nintendo's events will NOT be what you want them to be, assuming they do happen. Realistically, IP law gives corporations a lot of reach for how their properties are used, even if a lot of those rights aren't exercised too often, this IS their right to decide if they want their properties to be used in such a manner. If you don't like it, either pick someone less strict to deal with or make your own game, where you don't have to suffer someone else at all.

Even if Nintendo is targeting competitive scenes, I can't fully blame them. Most competitive scenes inevitably have an undesirable element that Nintendo probably doesn't want to be associated with.

Wasn't the sex abuse scandals mostly contained to Ultimate and/or the newer smashes though? I don't remember anything related to Melee or 64, and Nintendo didn't seem to support those tournaments either.

Smash has always kind of been the wild wild west of esports compared to most others for near two decades now. Although either becuase of Nintedos growing interest in the scene, the sexual abuse scadels or maybe both, thats changing now.

And in the future now people will either have to play by their pace and rules or....,well there is no choice honestly. This is Nintendo we're talking about.

Okay, I see where you're coming from here. I guess their target demographic skews younger, so they would rightfully be afraid that something like this could happen if younger players played at the same tournaments as older players. It's a shame though. I think if Nintendo was more hands on they could encourage a code of conduct.

so do you think people should just give up? the entire point of drawing attention to this is to hopefully bring enough awareness that the negative PR makes nintendo change their ways. or just hope they get tired of doing it and back off.

will it succeed? i'd have to say no if i had to guess, Nintendo is maybe the most out of touch and stubborn game company around. and their fans on the whole absolutely refuse to criticize them for anything so it's not like they have to worry about bad PR affecting their bottom line like most other companies.

They shut down one tournament because it used Slippi, meaning it necessarily used ROMs instead of real discs.
This wasn't an online Melee tournament, this was an Ultimate tournament. Nothing illegal about it, just up to Nintendo to decide to allow the prizes or not.

And people like competing in games that are fun to play. Imagine that...

If you know the history of the Smash scene, Nintendo doesn't like cash money tournaments even IF they get a cut. They actively hinder the scene, every once in a while lie and say they're going to do something and then never follow through, and cockblock any company that actually attempts to support the scene.

Nintendo could actually profit quite a bit from supporting it too, which is why its especially baffling.
